University of Leeds Celebrating the Games lecture series


The University of Leeds is delighted to present the third annual Celebrating The Games series of Olympic & Paralympic themed lectures in February and March 2011.
The series of free public lectures is recognised by the London 2012 Inspire Programme and features 9 different themes and subjects related to the Olympic & Paralympic Movement, London 2012, sport and sporting achievement.

The series opens on 4th February (12noon, Council Chambers, Parkinson Building) with Martin Green, Head of Ceremonies for London 2012. Martin is a University of Leeds graduate and will return to talk about his role in overseeing the Opening & Closing ceremonies, Medal Presentation ceremonies and the Torch Relay. Martin’s talk provides a unique opportunity to hear about how London and the UK will welcome the World during Games time – including an expected global audience of over 1.5billion who will watch coverage of the Olympic Opening Ceremony.
The second lecture is 'Leeds Triathlon and Golden Ambitions for London 2012' on Wednesday 9th February at 6:15pm. This talk will feature another Leeds alum Alistair Brownlee (2009 World Triathlon Champion) and current University of Leeds student Jonny Brownlee (2010 World Under-23 Triathlon Champion) and coaches Malcolm Brown & Jack Maitland. The evening will give an insight to the formation & development of the Leeds Triathlon elite training squad and how both athletes are aiming to qualify for the GB Team at London 2012.
Another highlight is the talk by Roger Mosey - Head of BBC 2012 (12 noon 25th February). Roger will talk about his role in overseeing the BBCs 2012 coverage across all genres and throughout the world. Prior to his current role, Roger has held a number of senior jobs within the BBC including Head of Radio 4’s Today programme, Head of BBC Radio 5live and Head of BBC Sport.
A number of high profile speakers will also participate in Celebrating The Games including;

Sir Ian Johnston - Head of Security for London 2012. 11th March.
Noel Thatcher - 5-time Paralympic Gold medallist. 5th March.
All lectures are free to attend and are open to all.
