A sad day. Run report 644, 7 December 2019

We were so very sad to report the passing of one of our most volunteeringest volunteers. Rolf Neugebauer volunteered more than 300 times, 200 of them as timekeeper, many of them supported by Alfie and Daisy the labradors. He was also our all-round handy person, making the trolleys for our kit and the portable noticeboard.

Rolf was also one of the loveliest people you could hope to meet, always there, helping  and encouraging and a friend to everyone. We will miss him so very much and send our love to his wife Sharron and the family.

We knew him for his multi-coloured trousers and head buffs. So to celebrate him, Sharron has asked us to Run for Rolf in our brightest kit and volunteer tee-shirts on Saturday. Will you join us?

Here's the rest of the run report.

The Freezing One – run report 643, 30 November 2019

By Dave Lingwood (who happens to be our 2000th unique volunteer - thanks, Dave!).

Sub freezing temperatures and treacherous ice were not enough to dissuade 472 hearty and headstrong runners from getting their parkrun fix at Woodhouse Moor on Saturday morning.

Gathering at the start, with the temperature hitting -2, Anne was on fine form as she belted out a ‘Good Morning’ to all assembled. After the usual housekeeping, attention turned to milestones. Congratulations to Amar Bhatti, who completed his 200th parkrun and Kerry PLAYLE who celebrated reaching her ton. Well done finally to Ria REMBACKEN and Susie WEEKES, who both completed their 50th parkrun. Lastly, there was a big round of applause for the 5K Your Way Move Against Cancer team, looking resplendent in their blue t-shirts, raising awareness of the work they do in supporting those affected by cancer through the benefits of physical activity. Well done to the 5K team and thank you again for coming down in such numbers.

With the feel good vibes at a high and the cold subsiding (sort of!), we were off. As a tourist visiting from York, I was excited to have an opportunity to explore the park. Setting off for the first lap, I really enjoyed the constantly changing scenery, sharp bends and corners. Running around the perimeter of the park and close to the edge of the grounds also afforded the chance to have a ‘nosey’ at the Hyde Park neighbourhood, something you cannot say for a lot of other parkruns! Halfway through the first lap, it became clear that some parts of the course were quite icy. A big thank you to the alert volunteer heroes in these areas who, in addition to standing in the freezing cold with cheerful smiles, were kind enough to point out and cordon off the most treacherous parts of the course for approaching runners. Your intervention certainly avoided quite a few ‘Bambi on ice’ moments, for me definitely!

Completing the second and third lap with more confidence, and even feeling slightly less freezing, I enjoyed crossing the line nearly as much as the course itself. Overall, a great location, a wonderfully friendly volunteer team and great organization, I definitely enjoyed my first visit to Leeds’ longest running parkrun. Thank you, and see you soon hopefully!

Many congratulations to all the participants including the following:

Sam ROBINS – First Male Finisher (17:19)

Anna STOCKS – First Female Finisher (20:12) with a new PB too!

Lee INGHAM – Best Age Grading (77.85%) on his 2nd ever parkrun.

George KAINYEK - Most Experienced Parkrunner, amazingly completing his 547th parkrun.

For the benefit of the statistically inclined we welcomed 55 first time visitors from different parkruns, and runners from clubs in Aberystwyth, Bingley, East London, Farsley, Harrogate, Horsforth, Hyde Park, Jarrow, Morpeth, Penistone, Presteigne, Ripon, Saltwell and York. Congratulations to the 57parkrunners who all smashed their PBs, an amazing achievement given the challenging conditions.  You are all amazing.

We finally welcomed 19 first ever parkrunners to Woodhouse. Well done to Sophia LUBIECKI, Daniel HOPLEY, Stephen CORCORAN, Sammy GIBSON, Joe BARBER, Joseph KUO, Ralph PORTER, Alex NEWSOME, Lewis BURTON, Laura JENKINS, Anna WILCOCK, Katharine MAY, Jacob RICHES, Rachel HODGSON, Jo BAXTER, Jane PRUST, Stephen PRUST, Isaac JACKSON and Will JACKSON. Congratulations to you all and welcome to the parkrun family. If you can make it today on such a cold day, next time will be a breeze I’m sure!
Don't forget, the first Saturday of the month is Pacer Saturday, if you want to pace, or want to be paced to a specific time, let us know. Also, the Wrangthorn Runners will be offering their usual warm coffee and cakey hospitality over at the church afterwards. And, if you have old trainers you no longer want, please bring them this week, they'll go to prisoners in Zimbabwe, men, women and, sadly, children.

Our parkrun wouldn’t have been possible without our wonderful volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to ensuring the event went as smoothly as ever. Thank you to the following awesome volunteers who braved the cold:

Andy JUDD, Anne AKERS, Ben JOHNSON, Chris CUNLIFFE, Chris FIELD, Claudia BAUER, Dave LINGWOOD, Dean FRANCIS, Emily GILL, Frank JONES, Guilia GADA, Helen NOYES, Jack EVANS, Jane CROSS, Joanne MCMANUS, Jonathan CONEY, Katherine KIRKHAM, Mark HADDRILL, Martin RAVEN, Meg BARKER, Nathan SMITH, Nick BROWN, Noel AKERS, Rebecca WHITE, Robyn JOHNSON, Sam HUANG, Shuyue YANG, Sophie VIPOND, Sue LUMBY and Tahera MAYAT.

Yes, we've recorded more than 200,000 parkruns at Woodhouse Moor since 2007, taking the number of completed kilometres to one million - that's a lot of shoe rubber on the paths of our lovely park!

The 200,000th runner was Ted Matson, who came in 27th with his time of 21.01. He was joined in the celebrations by his brother Ronan, who was over from Ireland and a first-timer with us, though a regular at Donabate.

Well done to Carol Gatehouse and Graham Littler who ran their 100ths and to Faye Birkby and Allan Todd who ran their 50ths.

We'll be joined this weekend by the 5k Your Way Move Against Cancer support group. They are with us the last Saturday of the month.

500 for Nicola! Run report 641, 16 November 2019

We had a happy celebration and sad news this week. A week after seven-year-old Poppy Forwood joined the 100 Club, her mum Nicola ran her 500th, in neon! She was joined by neon-clad friends and colleagues from all over the country.

Sadly we reported the death of Sue Smith. Sue,  a Hyde Park Harrier, who had run 228 parkruns, most of them with us, passed away on Friday. Sue had been ill for some time, but was always cheerful and fun, we'll miss her.

Just 50 parkruns behind Nicola is Adam Moger, who ran his 450th, Jason Newell joined the 250 Club, Barrie Hopson ran his 200th, Alys Griffiths 150, Peter Garrod and Nicole Woodward joined the 100 Club and James Nicholson, Sandra Warren, Marcus Sharpe and Jane Ryan ran their 50ths.

It was another record-breaker for Andrea Barras, who broke the VW70-74 age category record with her time of 25.52, an amazing 86.08%.

And a big thank you to international students from Leeds University who volunteered with us this week.
