The weather report from parkrun Towers this week was "Gordon Bennett it's chilly", and so it was although Gordon Bennett was nowhere to be seen. I just about managed to drive the spikes into the frosty ground, and speaking with Michael Conner before the run I could only describe the paddock as like a good Creme Brule, hard on the top and soft underneath.
After a number of "tough guys" requests I gave into the hard cases among us who said I should leave the puddles in place and so there were a couple to dodge at hospital corner. We'd deal with those later.
Everybody rolled up and we got in a very quick briefing, as it was so blinking cold, and headed to the start. It was great to have a run at the middle of the pack with Vonnie, although not totally sure she agrees as we spring up badger hill, with me chattering away. It was good chat to a friend Jez whose son Adam had caught the parkrun buzz and is putting in some great times. Dad did a great job with a sub 30 run. This is what parkrun is all about, meeting new friends, old friends and setting a target and putting yourself against the clock, INARIAR.
There were a number of PB's this week so well done to you if you bagged a new best time, notable mentions to Wendy Cole (16 seconds), Ross Robinson (first sub 30 run), Mike Fellows (1st sub 25 min run).
Another milestone passed this week was Katie Brookes who became our 1st Junior to complete her 50th parkrun event, Dad and Katie have been with us since our 5th event and has had some great runs with Dad, David, and parkrun buddy Jemima. Well done Katie fantastic to have done so many 5km runs at your age.
James Smith was first male runner back through the funnel, after a short break away from parkrun, posting a very fast time of 17:58 (oh how I would love a 17 something run). Emma Robertson was first female back and in a NEW PB time knocking a massive 44 seconds of her last time, fantastic run!!
Our Annual League points table is starting to look very interesting too, the female points table has Nichola Robinson in 1st position, with Michelle Thompson and Bethan Stimson close behind, all previous parkrunners of the month. The male points table is close too with Chris Garret leading the men closely followed by Matthew Fitzgerald and the parkrunner of the month Richard Beetlestone. If you want to check out the league and other interesting statistics go to the website and look under results, there's loads there....Remember there's 100 points everytime you volunteer too.
Did I say it was a parkrun of two halves. Well here's why, after we finished a very enthusiastic team of parkrunners offered their weekend time to help improve the course under the guidance of Rob Stevenson who manages the Country Park for the Council. We moved around 7 tonnes (or is it tons) of gravel to Hospital Corner area, and chopped back some of the overhanging branches on the trail. It was a flurry of shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, and we plan to are now planning a bid for the HS2 link work as a result ;0). Thanks so much to everyone for helping imporove the park for us the whole of Worcester.
Well we hope you enjoyed your parkrun this weekend and it got your weekend off to a good start.
