Dan Dan the parkrun Man, Worcester parkrun, Event number 86, 9th February 2013

In the infamous words of Larry Grayson "What a grey day" or some such nonsense, and the hi-viz jackets were really standing out in the murk that was resting over the City this week.  That said nothing can dampen the spirits of 134 parkrunners and throng of volunteers who came to Worcester parkrun to take on the infamous "ploppy paddock" and its muddy start.

Before proceedings got underway all the volunteers were given their roles and yet again we had a great turnout, so thanks for helping out it makes the run so much easier to manage.  A few people were giving it their first "volunteering" go like Paul Mason who was assisted by experienced David Gray on numbers, and others like Carol Rudolf (Cafe turn) have recently laid claim to their spots, just like her predecessors we have Derek-on-timer (as he's the bravest), Anne "finish straight" and Elaine "Registration Queen". Eddie from Eddies Corner remains with his leg up but back soon we hope. This week Wendy and Leo took on the big responsibility and got everyone to go the right way around the play area this week, phew, so thanks to all the volunteers, you rock. Parkrunner of the month was awarded to Dan Cale, Dan's done over 50 parkruns and is a local runner and races loads around the area, and I think just about everyone knows him and Jack, so well done Dan. It was a perfectly timed entry to the briefing having arrived just as we were announcing his prize. Enjoy the new trainers courtesy of Sweatshop.

Derek set everyone off around the paddock, and we'll let you into a little secret, we forgot to start the clock!! There was no panic though as we had planned for this and the backup timer kicked in and we synched up the times accordingly, love it when a plan comes together!! The paddock delivered a squelchy start, and off everyone went into the woods.

We managed to see the first few runners coming through before heading back to the finish to clock you home, everyone was smiling although it was getting pretty cold. The first male runner back was Andrew Hodgson who was up from Bridgend and Tom Stock (junior) flew around to be close behind, Megz Judge was first in the female making it her 9th 1st time home, Sarah Kellett was not to far behind as well.

Derek and I continued to check you home, our fingers being kept warm by the rapid clicking of the finishers. There were some good sprints, across "ploppy paddock" and 100% of runners stayed upright despite a couple of skids, spins, and one fine spin from Jennifer Thomson who was down from her usual Conkers run. I have since been informed that Conkers is a place not a new running style. Although a Conkers Finish does sound very descriptive of a slip and slide across the paddock. Anyway lovely to see you Jennifer.

The final runner came home Vonnie, last week I took last place and she took it this week having cleared up the signs, tape and poles from the course, thanks bab. Registration all ran perfectly as always by Elaine Marston and Jan Mills, thanks. So it was a quick run into the cafe for a warming brew and post the results.

Hope you had a lovely parkrun this week and it was a good start to your weekend, we have so much fun laying on parkrun at Worcester and we hope you enjoy it too despite the odd spot of mud ;0).
