Return of Workington parkrun – 24/07/21

Welcome back to Workington parkrun

The period of time, spanning almost a year and a half, has been an extremely challenging one; and all of the event team, here at Workington, want to ensure as safe a return as possible to the thing that may have previously become part of a welcome and expected aspect of your weekly routine.  To help us achieve this, parkrun UK have ensured that the majority of the recording processes are now entirely hands-free. What remains an essential element of the parkrun code is that Runners and Walkers bring their Barcode (on paper, wristband or key fob format).

Don't Forget Your Barcode.

In addition, Workington parkrun has considered and tested its processes, prior to Saturday 24th July. This has resulted in need to adhere to a few basic guidelines in the first weeks, some of which will gradually return to previous practice when it is safe to do so. Please adhere to the following until further notice:

  1. Please park in designated car parks (Allerdale pay and display). We do not, as yet, have access to Workington leisure centre to enable free parking or use of their toilets. Further (1 hour) disc parking is available in Workington town centre, where easy access to the parkrun start area is available via the steps by Wilko/Gala Bingo building. A relatively new private (pay and display) car park is sited next to Workington police station. Limited free parking is available alongside the River Derwent, on a minor road, just off the beginning of Workington bridge as you proceed out of town.
  2. Please arrive to the start in timely fashion, maintaining effective social distance as the start is assembled.
  3. The first timers brief will be clearly flagged and signalled when it is about to begin.
  4. The starting brief will be brief! Please remain quiet to ensure all instructions are heard.
  5. On return throught the finish funnel Please keeping moving; Hold out a hand for your postion token; You will be directed to the scanning team; Hold out your personal barcode to be scanned (in paper, wristband or key fob format); Hold out your Position token to be scanned; Drop the token in a bucket; You will then be directed toward any belongings and away from the start/finish area.
  6. Please avoid congregating.
  7. We will aim to return to our Sociable after-run gathering very soon; but in the meantime, we will not be gathering at Workington Cricket club

Return of Workington parkrun – Update

Background work at organisational and local levels has stepped up a pace in preparation for the long awaited return of parkrun in England. Junior parkruns have happily begun and we wait with growing excitement to see the 5k version return on the 5th June if possible.  In the meantime keep well and Happy Running All.

Workington parkrun postponement

As expected, were sorry to confirm that parkruns remain cancelled until the end of April 2020 and probably afterwards too. Regular global updates will be sent out next week. Keep safe all.

Saturday 9th August – uploading issue

You may have already spotted the note on the Workington parkrun page that there is an issue with the uploading of the results from Saturdays event - the scanner would not connect to the computor.

We are still looking to see if this is something we can overcome and hope to get the results up if we can. Thank you for your patience and apologies for any delay!

Workington parkrun

Nearly 1 year old!!

Well on the 21st June we celebrate our 1st birthday, and we want everyone to come join us and celebrate with some sparkly beverages and a piece of cake!

We've had 775 runners in that time what are the chances we could get most of those back on Saturday (possibly not those who've traveled from all corners of the Country although it would be great to see you again!) - even if you haven't ran since that 1st run on the 22nd June 2013 come and share half an hour after the morning run with us.

We will be awarding some prizes once everyone is back from the run including top points scorers (male and female) and the Workington parkrun champion.

Us volunteers have had such a fantastic time over the last 12 months, meeting new people and listening to all the wonderful stories from our runners parkrun journeys and we hope this will continue for many years to come so thank you for all your support.

If anyone wants to get involved in the coordination or development of the parkrun please just talk to one of us and we'll find you a job, although I'm not sure Tony will give up his role as none scanner note taker very easily!

Our June 7th front runners were:
Women -
Susan CAIN was first (13th overall) 21:28
Dawn PRITCHARD was second (17th overall) 21:40
Kelly BARRATT was third (19th overall) over the line in 22:03

Men -
Andrew HENDERSON was first over the line in 17:22
Gary PALA was second over the line in 18:13.
Des MORRIS was third over the line in 18:27.

Well done to our most recent sweatshop winner Chris Wear hope you've got yourself some hot new footwear!

And finally, if anyone has borrowed one of our delightful hi viz vests in the past, please can we get it back! We've lost a couple and we're very fond of them!

See you Saturday!

Bex
