worthing parkrun event #207: 20th November 2021.

This week we are grateful to Jack BACON who wrote to us asking if he could write our run report. It's another role that gives you a volunteer credit, so why not give it a go.

Over to you Jack

#207 Calm conditions made for a super, speedy Saturday among the
lead pack

Some of the county’s quickest runners took advantage of the favourable forecast

and travelled to Worthing seafront as the top 27 battled to a collective sub 19-
minute finish.
But the action didn’t just stop towards the front, as many as 100 participants felt
the need for speed and went on to register personal bests.
A healthy turnout of 472 parkrunners were rewarded for their efforts with mild
temperatures and light winds on a day where the fast, flat course stayed true to
its billing and inspired friendly competition throughout the field.
Congratulations to BEN SHORT of Crawley Athletic Club, who claimed the club
honours and a p1 finish in an exceptional time of 15:36. Representing South
London Harriers, tourist SUSAN McDONALD was the fastest woman to cross in
the line in 18 th place with a time of 18:29. Notable mentions also go out to
FIONA VILES and GARY VILES, the pair, representing Horley and Crawley
respectively, have remarkably racked up more than 800 parkruns combined!
Out of the 25 juniors in attendance, a big well done goes to Worthing & District
Harriers’ ETHAN NEALE following his p17 finish in a time of 18:20.
Congratulations to the nine parkrun enthusiasts who all achieved individual
milestones, especially ANTON A (21:29) and HELEN BERETTA (28:35) on
completing their 100 th event. Elsewhere, joining the 50 club are the trio of JAMES
TICEHURST (18:12), SARAH CUTLER (33:08) and Steven Deans (34:39).
Meanwhile, eager to order the newly introduced, 25 run purple t-shirt will be
MATT JUSTICE (22:05, CHRIS BOND (26:08), ANDY SAYCH (26:17) and NICKY
SHAW (33:13). Shoutouts go to the 15 individuals who got their first taste of
parkrun on Saturday, we hope you enjoyed the experience and hopefully look
forward to welcoming you back many more times.
As ever, a massive, heartfelt thank you goes to all of the volunteers who make
this event possible week in, week out. You were relentless in your vocal support
and clapping throughout the run which really does make such a difference to us
all. Thank you for giving up your time to motivate us, you’re all hugely
appreciated. I for one am enjoying contributing now and again through barcode
scanning and run reporting. It’s important we don’t take it for granted that each
Saturday’s event is guaranteed to take place. And so I’d urge everyone to
volunteer at least once during the year and encourage your parkrun family and
friends to do the same.
Today was my fourth visit to Worthing parkrun and I was thrilled to clock a
modest PB (28:42). The out and back flat course is a favourite of mine and I’m
benefitting from my new routine of running three times a week to get myself in
shape for my Saturday 5k fix. I look forward to keeping it up during the winter
months and reap the rewards of living a fitter and stronger lifestyle.

Well done to everyone on their run and for being a part of event no. 207 – aka

‘Speedy Saturday’.
Jack Bacon

worthing parkrun event #205: 6th November 2021

What a difference a week makes! This week's better weather resulted in 375 people running, jogging or walking the course, of whom 30 were first-timers.  There were 69 recorded new Personal Bests and today, representatives of 39 different clubs took part.

There are some impressive milestones to celebrate today.

First up is Craig HARDWICK, who completed his 250th parkrun today, with 150 of them completed at Worthing, an amazing achievement congratulations Craig.

Today's volunteer shout-out goes to Chiara BALLARD and John ROBINSON (pictured above.)

Chiara is currently doing her Duke of Edinburgh award and today celebrated her 50th volunteering milestone at Worthing.  Chiara has now volunteered across several key roles, but today she took the bold step of shadowing as Run Director, and she was AWESOME.

We asked Chiara to write something for this week's report, here it is

"....my name is Chiara, and I'm a young volunteer at Worthing parkrun.  Today 6th November, was my 50th time volunteering, and I was the Run Director.  Parkrun has helped me develop skills that I didn't know I had, such as teamwork.  The Worthing parkrun team are a wonderful group of people and they have helped me throughout my time here.  I really enjoy coming to parkrun and I always have a great time talking to the volunteers and runners.  I would definitely recommend it!"

Thank you Chiara and congratulations, we all look forward to you leading us in the future.

And so to John ROBINSON, what can we say about John? Not only has John run parkrun  161 times (130 of them at Worthing), but today was also his 100th occasion for volunteering.  Thank you, John; you are an inspiration.

There are always so many things to celebrate each week, it's the personal stories and sense of community that makes parkrun so special.  This week that sentiment has been illustrated beautifully by our very own Uncle Ramjam.

IMG_1292

It was a tad drizzly at worthing parkrun #199 this morning but great to see 378 people run, jog or walk the course. This morning 39 of you were new to Worthing parkrun, with 18 complete first-timers to parkrun; welcome to the parkrun tribe. And 54 of you recorded new Personal Bests today; congratulations.

Some special shout out’s for this morning;

  • David CURTIS, congratulations on your 100th parkrun
  • Nick CHAMBERS, congratulations on your 50th parkrun

Wear your black and red t-shirts with pride.

Our weekly volunteer focus is on the role of the number checker. The number checker is responsible for recording (but not correcting) discrepancies that may arise between the timer and the numbers given out. Throughout the run, they record data between the Timekeeper and Finish Token volunteers. It's a key role that helps the results processing each week. If you want a role that keeps you moving while volunteering, then give number checking a go!

IMG_9371

As a gentle reminder, all parkrun events operate under the COVID-19 Framework; all of us, both volunteers and runners, have a role in ensuring some simple and basic etiquette. Let's talk about spitting; participants should not spit anywhere on the course, and that includes the funnel folks.

Next week is our 200th parkrun; this is your chance to get creative. We know how much you all love a spot of dressing up. For our 200th parkrun, the fancy dress theme is 'How Worthing Parkrun Makes Me Feel'. We will have cameras at the ready.

Enjoy your week folks.

This week 458 people ran, jogged, or walked the course, of whom 54 were new to Worthing parkrun with 25 of you complete first-timers - welcome to the parkrun tribe! There has obviously been lots of training going on in the last few weeks, as today 77 new PB's were recorded - you guys are on fire !!

This week, a few newbies got a bit confused at the finish, a big plea, if you are new to worthing parkrun, please do take the time to attend the first-timers briefing, it might take seconds off your finish time.

A special shoutout to some 50 'Milestoners', firstly, Andrea FALLEN (pictured above), along with Ben Duncan & Caroline ALLEN.  Congratulations all of you, wear your Red T-Shirt with pride!

In addition, a HUGE shout-out today for Michael JONES who is now in the 250 club! WOW

In other news, here at Worthing parkrun HQ, we are a little obsessed with numbers.  Did you know that since we started (Jun 2016) 11,016 participants have run, jogged, or walked the course?  Since that date, we have had 757 volunteers; if you have never volunteered before come and give it a go, it really is a rewarding thing to do, it's also quite good fun!  This week's volunteer focus is on timekeeping.

The Timekeeper is responsible for recording the finish time of all the participants at the event, all you need is to download the parkrun app and have a keen eye. There are always 2 of you doing the job, so never worry that you 'might get it wrong. If you fancy having a go, please do let us know at worthing@parkrun.com.  This week our Timekeeping Team was Chris MCALEES & Amanda de RIDDER. - great job guys, Thank You!

Worthing parkrun event #197 4th September 2021

Before we share the usual stats for Worthing parkrun number 197, we need to acknowledge the work that is done behind the scenes by the volunteers that give of their time throughout the week. This week we want to say a huge thank you to Ian SCHIFFER who spent much of last week reading emails, organising the volunteer rosta, and making sure that we had enough volunteers in place to make parkrun happen. Thank you Ian and to the other 30 volunteers for their amazing efforts this week.

A few special mentions this week's Martin BALLARD recorded his 50th parkrun - great work Martin and worth your Dad getting you out of bed to do it! Martin's Dad, Sam BALLARD acted as Visual Impairment runner this week for Clinton CORIN, a special message from Clinton, 'Thank you Sam for your excellent guidance again this morning, running would not be possible without your help. Even though I have useful vision, negotiating/navigating crowds and obstacles is difficult on the move'.

Finally, have you ever wondered what it is like to volunteer?  This week 'Uncle Ramjam' has illustrated his experience perfectly !.
