The weather conditions were perfect as 429 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 60 were first-timers to Worthing.  The PB Bell was ringing today as 94 of you recorded new Personal Bests, great work.  There were 47 different running clubs that took part this morning.  We had a visit this week from the Foxy Ladies Running Club. It is always good to see you, and we certainly heard you !

Wear your red shirts with pride.

A special mention to our turnaround volunteer this week, who certainly up'd the fashion stakes for today.

We often shine the spotlight on one of our volunteer roles, and this week, we want to talk about the 'Event Day Course Check'.   The Event Day Course Check involves checking the entire route is safe to use on the day.  We often struggle to find someone to do this role, which means that the Run Director does it.  If you walk, cycle or run from George V, then you can easily earn a volunteer credit before you even run.

Finally, the parkrun report is never complete without thoughts from Uncle Ramjam this week chasing fame....

This week 458 people ran, jogged, or walked the course, of whom 54 were new to Worthing parkrun with 25 of you complete first-timers - welcome to the parkrun tribe! There has obviously been lots of training going on in the last few weeks, as today 77 new PB's were recorded - you guys are on fire !!

This week, a few newbies got a bit confused at the finish, a big plea, if you are new to worthing parkrun, please do take the time to attend the first-timers briefing, it might take seconds off your finish time.

A special shoutout to some 50 'Milestoners', firstly, Andrea FALLEN (pictured above), along with Ben Duncan & Caroline ALLEN.  Congratulations all of you, wear your Red T-Shirt with pride!

In addition, a HUGE shout-out today for Michael JONES who is now in the 250 club! WOW

In other news, here at Worthing parkrun HQ, we are a little obsessed with numbers.  Did you know that since we started (Jun 2016) 11,016 participants have run, jogged, or walked the course?  Since that date, we have had 757 volunteers; if you have never volunteered before come and give it a go, it really is a rewarding thing to do, it's also quite good fun!  This week's volunteer focus is on timekeeping.

The Timekeeper is responsible for recording the finish time of all the participants at the event, all you need is to download the parkrun app and have a keen eye. There are always 2 of you doing the job, so never worry that you 'might get it wrong. If you fancy having a go, please do let us know at worthing@parkrun.com.  This week our Timekeeping Team was Chris MCALEES & Amanda de RIDDER. - great job guys, Thank You!

Under the parkrun Covid framework, to ensure people are not crowding at the start for longer than necessary, we are keeping the briefing to essential info only at present. If you or someone you know has a milestone or anything else to celebrate one week, please do let us know though as we are happy to share this on social media and in the run report.

Worthing parkrun #192 31st July 2021

Seems like only last week that we were doing this - how brilliant to be back

It all starts with a coffee at home before setting off for the 192nd Worthing parkrun. On arrival, you are greeted by the arriving volunteers keen to check in with the Volunteer Coordinator. A few of them have been there since 8.15am, carrying out the pre-event setup duties before taking part in the run for themselves. As the clock ticks down towards the time for the pre-event briefing, I’m introduced to Jamie Dawson who has come along and volunteered to join me at the pre run briefing to provide Sign Language Support - Thanks Jamie and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

This week 454 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 78 were first timers and 59 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 47 different clubs took part.

Keeping Runners, volunteers and the general public safe during these challenging times remains the priority of parkrun, so we would like to thank everyone who takes the time to adhere to the COVID-19 Code. Here's a quick reminder of the code

COVID19-parkrun-WR-CoC_EN-colour-v1

With over 60% of the field finishing within a 10 minute window, things got very busy for our barcode scanners this week. Remember, if you run sub 23 minutes and have 15 - 20 minutes to spare after you have run, you can also get a volunteer credit by helping out with a spot of barcode scanning. It's really simple and all you need is a smart phone (there are a few issues with huawei phones at the moment) and the app.

Head on over to with the parkrun website to find out all you need to know about the parkrun virtual volunteer app. You can sign up for volunteering by dropping an email to Worthing@parkrun.com - just remember to include your parkrun barcode number.

The return of Worthing parkrun! Event number 191 24th July 2021

So after 70 weeks without parkrun, & some of us doing (not)parkruns on our own in the meantime, it was back!

How wonderful it was to see everyone again and so many happy faces. A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes at parkrun HQ from research into the risks of outdoor activity, to developing a comprehensive Covid Framework for parkrun, to liaising with landowners and teams to bring parkrun back.

We had plenty to do at Worthing to get back up & running again too: checking and preparing the kit, updating everyone on the new Framework and thinking through how we would manage with the restart of parkrun coinciding with the Lions Festival funfair on the promenade. Not to mention the car sales promotion and all the new food and drink and other concessions that have popped up along the seafront whilst we have been away!

It was a sleepless night for the core team of volunteers the night before, hoping everything would go well and also that the massive thunderstorm at 4am would be all gone by the morning! Luckily the storm moved on and everything worked smoothly, including moving the first timers briefing and pre-run briefing to the beach/shingle next to the start.

And what a lot of first timers we had - welcome to parkrun! We really look forward to seeing you regularly. Did you know you can use your printed barcode to attend any parkrun in the world?

We also had a lot of PBs this week, which was especially impressive given the obstacles and pinch points in the first kilometre getting past the funfair - well done everyone!

A huge thank you to everyone that came & to all our volunteers, it felt so good to be back! See you again next week!

This week 394 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 68 were first timers and 61 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 44 different clubs took part.

Worthing parkrun Event number 189 7th March 2020

This week we were celebrating International Women's Day #IWDparkrun and there are some great photos of our event with the This Girl Can selfie frame on our Facebook page!

We also celebrated our stalwart volunteers Sue and Ben Swan reaching the amazing milestone of having each volunteered on 50 separate occasions at Worthing parkrun - that's a lot of token sorting (which is their favourite volunteer role) in the café after parkrun!

Congratulations also go to Michael Chambers, our Co-Op #HealthySwaps champion, who completed his 100th parkrun.

You may also spot a photo on our Facebook page of the Leeds Building Society #BigCommunityRelay gold baton. This week's RD Belinda had rather excitedly managed to get her hands on this at Clevedon Salthouse Fields parkrun the previous Saturday and it has now been passed on to tourist Jill Taylor who will be taking it to Blyth Links parkrun next week!

532 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 56 were first timers to parkrun or to Worthing and 124 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 40 different clubs took part.

Run Report 187 – Windy@Worthing

It was great to see so many people brave the 40 mph westerly that accompanied Worthing parkrun this morning.  Today, 356 of you ran, jogged, walked, and 30 wonderful people put themselves forward to volunteer and make parkrun happen this morning.

There were 42 new faces at Worthing today. To all you first timers and tourists a very warm welcome was given  - great to see you and we do hope to see you again.  A special shout out to Dan Goodwin ED from Catton Parkrun who joined us today with a few of his team - we hope you enjoyed the run home.

Catton

A special mention to Paul Hurley from Worthing Striders who celebrated his 100th park run today with a very tidy 24 minutes.

I make no apologies for now focusing on the 30 volunteers that made parkrun happen today.  Running in today's conditions was hard - I wager that standing and volunteering is harder.   Without exception every member of the volunteer team today played their part with good humour and passion and I say again that parkrun would not happen without you.  If you run regularly and have never volunteered I would encourage you to give it a go - it really is possible to do both.

Today, my shining example is CHRIS SULLIVAN. Chris has run on 63 occasions and has volunteered at 38 events here at Worthing, carrying out 54 tasks - today he completed 3 tasks and managed to run..... it really is possible and Chris, on behalf of the Worthing Core Team our sincere thanks.  I would have posted a pic but clearly he was too busy to pose :)

All of our volunteers are heros and I would like to thank them all today - here they are...

Cheryl COSTELLO • Steve EASTTY • Paul WOODCOCK • John PURSGLOVE • Amanda DE RIDDER • Jayn STAPLETON • Marilyn KEMP • Chris MCALEES • Carolynn MARTIN • Lana CHRISTMAS • Mark CHRISTMAS • John ROBINSON • Ian SCHIFFER • Heidi CHRISTMAS • Victoria DALTON HORNER • Sharon BELTON • Alan BOXALL • Louise HOWARTH • Mike BELTON • Ella DALTON-HORNER • Haydn LE MANQUAIS • Chris SULLIVAN • Jenny GAIN • Dixon Maurice DILLEY • Sue SWAN • Ben SWAN • Kayleigh POLLOCK • Ricky HORSCRAFT • Charlie-Diego BAKER • Neil LE MANQUAIS

Worthing parkrun Event number 186 8th February 2020

Our first timer numbers were swelled this week at parkrun, thanks to a number of tourists who were visiting for the Worthing Running Festival on 9th February. Unfortunately Storm Ciara had put paid to the Running Festival, but Richard Xerri, the organiser was at parkrun to update everyone on when he hopes to get the runs rescheduled as well as handing out free buffs to anyone who had bought their race chip along to return. The race chips cost the race organisers a lot of money so please remember to return them.

Talking of returning things - we had a very old finish token returned this week! One of our runners, who told us he last did parkrun about 4 years ago (so before Worthing parkrun had even started!) went over to the barcode scanners with his finish token from today's parkrun and also what he thought was his athlete barcode. What he actually had instead of his barcode was a very worn and faded finish token from the last time he did a parkrun! Hopefully he won't wait another 4 years before doing his next parkrun and hopefully he'll also bring a printed version of his actual barcode next time so he can get a result!

Don't forget there are lots of ways you can bring your barcode along to parkrun, so as well as printing one off from your computer, you can also order cards, tags and wristbands from parkrun all printed with your barcode which you can use at the scanners. You can also get a water bottle with your barcode on too, although this will not scan of course!

#IWD – International Women’s Day parkrun

On Saturday 7 March 2020, the day before International Women’s Day, lots of parkruns around the world, including Worthing, will be hosting a female-focused parkrun celebration. #IWDparkrun will be supported by This Girl Can, a campaign created by parkrun partner Sport England.

parkrun research shows us that, across the world, women are less likely than men to take part in parkrun. Despite the fact that females make 54% of registrations, they are less likely than men to take part in parkrun and to continue participating. #IWDparkrun is a fantastic opportunity to encourage more women and girls to participate in parkrun events all over the world.

So why not join in with the celebrations by bringing a female friend, colleague or family member and walk, jog, run or volunteer together! & why not join in with the suggested PURPLE dress code for the day! (great opportunity to wear your purple milestone volunteer t-shirt!)

Worthing parkrun event #183 18th January 2020

It was a cold and frosty morning that greeted the 646 runners at the 183rd Worthing parkrun event. The pre event course inspection had deemed the frosty patches along the prom passable with care. So, with the aid of a little salt/grit scattered along the finish straight, we were all set to go.

The pre-event run briefing highlighted a number of regulars who were hitting their own personal milestones. So congratulations go to the following;

50th parkrun - James WALKER, Finley CLEAVER, Sue SWAN, Ben SWAN and Heather JOY

100th parkrun - Lana CHRISTMAS and Beverley HARRISON

250th parkrun – Mike SILK

Also, amongst our volunteers this week, Hayden CHRISTMAS was celebrating his 25th time as a volunteer.

Pictured below L to R - Hayden, Sue, Ben, Lana, Finley and James

milestones

With such a big field, and with only three volunteers down to do barcode scanning this week, an appeal was made at the pre run briefing for any runners completing their run within or around 25 minutes, to help with barcode scanning. The great thing about the parkrun Virtual Volunteer App is that anyone with a Smart phone can help out. All you have to do is download the app, let the Volunteer Co-ordinator or Run Director know that you will help out and they will give a you a quick tutorial if required. Then, once you have finished scanning it’s important to remember to email the information you’ve scanned to Worthing@parkrun.com before you leave, otherwise we wouldn’t be able to process the results! – As an added bonus your also get a Volunteer credit – what’s not to love about that? Thanks go to Roy BARACLOUGH, Andrew WALKER and Mark BROCKLEHURST for stepping into the breach this week.

This week 646 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 64 were first timers and 107 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 48 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 31 volunteers:

John BATEMAN • Malcolm HALES • Mark BROCKLEHURST • Richard BARRON • Belinda ROBINSON • Chris SLOGGETT • Paul WOODCOCK • Amanda DE RIDDER • Steven YOUNG • Roy BARRACLOUGH • Andrew WALKER • Chris MCALEES • Ed WAIN • John ROBINSON • Clare KENNARD • Ian SCHIFFER • Sharon BELTON • Mike BELTON • Julia GLEESON • Chris ELLIS • Haydn LE MANQUAIS • Jenny GAIN • Chris CONSTABLE • Dixon Maurice DILLEY • Hayden CHRISTMAS • Leo CHRISTMAS • Sue SWAN • Ben SWAN • Helen WINSER • Charlie-Diego BAKER • Neil LE MANQUAIS
