Wotton parkrun #171 – School’s Out!

"Bonjour, la classe!

"OK, settle down, I know it's an unexpected end of term but there're still a few things to do. Firstly, let's do a quick head count and see how many are in parkrun school today - 1, 2, 3...47, 48 eager faces. Well, hello, any new faces, put yer hand up? Oh, hi, you're from Chippenham and Cirencester. Well, welcome to Wotton parkrun - Tim Smith, if you don't stop talking, I won't let you have a PB later!

fini

"Right, sorry, welcome to Wotton, one and all. Let's move on to the superstar volunteers who're supporting you this week - I'll just run down the register - whoop enthusiastically if you're here: Naomi PRICE • Pip MARROW • Andrew PRICE • Linda COHEN • Andy KIRKUP • Tom MORGAN • Thomas MORGAN • Grace MORGAN • Kerry MORGAN • Sarah WATT • Pauline DRAISEY • Rebecca FLINT • Margaret BADGER • Sandy HOPES • Anne HARTLEY • Catherine KNOWLES • Ted PRICE • Samuel KING • Amy WATSON

vols

"Now, as you know, with no thanks to coronavirus there won't be any parkruns for the foreseeable future. So, as you'd expect at parkrun school, I've got some homework for you. There are two subjects to do this week, French and PE, and more to follow over the coming weeks. Photographic evidence of the PE homework being undertaken (at a safe distance from others) would help inspire us all so make sure you post them on our Farcebook page.

Wotton parkrun #170 – 7th March 2020

Saturday saw a dry run (whoop!) for a change and we finally had a bit of a break from the storms of late. The PARC looked great and has somehow managed to dry up a little..... the rivers and streams from the previous week had gone at least.

mud

The hi-viz team welcomed and cheered 42 happy runners around the PARC, each achieving a muddy 5k. Whilst we had no brand new runners, we did welcome runners from Cheltenham, Stroud, Bristol and Quedgeley.

mud

We also had some “this girl can” t shirts on offer in celebration of International Women’s Day, there are lots of inspirational stories behind our parkrunners and if you would like to share yours you still can using the hashtags #GlosGirlCan or #IWDparkrun.

If you would like to receive news and support to help women in Gloucestershire get active you can join Glos Girl Can, you just need to email hello@wecanmove.net to sign up.

Wotton parkrun #169 – 29th February 2020

First ever Leap Day parkrun

After a long night of yet more rain, storm Jorge calmed down a little for our 9am start. With another weeks worth of rain, the course was at it's wettest and muddiest ever. This didn't deter our 29 amazing finishers - and what a fantastic number on 29th Feb!!!

mud

start

At the run briefing, we celebrated Helen Lennox's Leap Day Birthday - Helen has marshalled on her corner 78 times and her parents presented her with her very own 'Helen's Corner' sign. Thanks also to Mary for the delicious cookies and Granola bars.

Helen

We had 9 first time visitors to Wotton with local tourists from Cheltenham, Gloucester, Forest of Dean, Eastville and Pomphrey Hill.

vols

First finishers were Andy Kirkup with an impressive time for the conditions of 21:37 - this was Andy's 29th run at Wotton, and Julia Edwards on her first visit to Wotton with a time of 28:05. Unsurprisingly there were no PBs today!!

One of our regular runners Thomas M completed his 100th run and has now earned himself his black milestone t-shirt - well done Thomas and thank you Kerry for the goodies at the finish :-)

Tom M

Thank you to all our volunteers especially those helping to marshal the car park this week - our hi-viz heroes were Naomi PRICE, Andrew PRICE, Tom MORGAN, Grace MORGAN, Heath GWILLIAM, Kerry MORGAN, Ann FITZJOHN, David FITZJOHN, Nigel DODD, Pauline DODD, Julie JENNER, Carl JENNER, Rebecca FLINT, Mary LENNOX, Helen LENNOX, Samuel KING and Amy WATSON

volunteers

Next week parkrun will be celebrating international Women's Day and we would love you to bring along anyone who has been thinking about coming to parkrun, but hasn't quite made it yet - just remember to get them to register and print off a copy of their barcode.

We will also have our pop-up cafe in the Community Sports Centre after parkrun - the Ladies Circle will be selling hot drinks, squash, bacon rolls and cakes/cookies. Don't forget to bring a change of footwear as mud not allowed in sports centre!!!

Wotton parkrun #168 – 22nd February 2020

After a rare week off thanks to Storm Dennis it was back to the Community PARC for Wotton parkrun #168.

The wind and the mud made it a challenging run for all, but the rain stayed away and the sun shone brightly as 43 parkrunners ran, jogged and walked the Wotton Butterfly in high spirits.

runners

We welcomed 11 first timers to Wotton this week including first finishers Nicholas Dobson and Lindsay Veevers. We were delighted to host tourists all the way from Torquay and many from parkruns closer to home.

Wotton parkrun #167 – 8th February 2020 – in the pink

Large parts of the UK were threatened by storm Ciara over the weekend. Organisers of Sundays Dursley Dozen sadly had to cancel their event because of risk for runners, marshals and spectators. Fortunately at 9am on Saturday in Wotton, conditions were still calm and we were able to hold our parkrun uninterrupted.

 start

This week was also marked by arrival of new vests for all our marshals, in the distinctive pink of parkrun corporate sponsor Vitality.  Our team of fantastic volunteers were Amy Watson, Andrew Price, Ann Fitzjohn, Becky Shaw, Carl Jenner, Claire Gallagher, Dave Draisey, David Fitzjohn, Grace Morgan, Jeremy Hull, Julie Jenner, Kerry Morgan, Lucy Shaw, Pauline Draisey, Pete Wintle, Peter Chaffer, Pip Marrow, Rosie Wintle, Samuel King, Sue Smith, Thomas Morgan and Tim Smith. A special mention for Samuel who reached his 25th volunteering milestone and completed his silver D of E volunteering.

vols

Paul O'Mara from Tyneside, who had been hoping to try the Dozen, came to our only-slightly-less-gruelling 5k. He led the field home in a very creditable 19.29, the fastest time since October.

PoM

Another first-time visitor, Jan North from Andover, sprinted head-down for the line to be first female finisher and get the day's highest age-grading of 70.9%.

JN

Overall we had 62 runners and four of our regular or returning runners achieved new PBs. We celebrated all this at another pop-up café in the sports centre, enjoying drinks, bacon rolls and home-made cake. The Wotton Ladies Circle raised £80 for the Southmead Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. Runners and volunteers also donated items for the Stroud foodbank.

IWD – parkrun celebration on 7th March 2020

Across the world, parkrun are joining in a celebration of female participation by hosting a special event on Saturday 7th March, ahead of International Women's Day the following day.

In England we are working with our partners Sport England, supporting the This Girl Can campaign to help address the gender gap seen widely in sports.

Bring a female friend, colleague or family member and walk, jog, run or volunteer together for #IWDparkrun - if they would like their time recorded please ask them to register and bring along their barcode.

Wotton parkrun #166 – 1st February 2020

Well that was parkrun number 166…. The first of 5 in February (this won’t happen again until I reach retirement….. I’ll let you all think about that, but it’s not anytime soon!) - the one where we managed to escape the rain.

start

On Saturday we welcomed 49 runners to the legendary Wotton mud, including runners from London and Newport as well as some of the more local parkruns.

Ted

We had 11 first timers to our lovely course and somehow 2 of you managed to achieve PBs.

ladies

I have to mention Ted, who has now earned his white t shirt for completing 10 parkruns! Huge congratulations Ted!

ted

I have to say its lovely each time I am RD to have an opportunity to chat to the runners and it’s always nice to hear comments from our regular attendees and our tourists. One of the things I often hear is how friendly our parkrun is, how supportive the marshals are and what a fab course we have. I think we are very lucky to have such a lovely parkrun community, thank you to everyone for making our parkrun such fun and thanks to those who wear hi viz week on week to enable us to put parkrun on.
This week's hi-viz heroes were - Naomi PRICE • Kerry WHITTON • Thomas MORGAN • Grace MORGAN • Kerry MORGAN • Ann FITZJOHN • David FITZJOHN • Sarah WATT • Pauline DRAISEY • Dave DRAISEY • Christine GORDON • Adam ELDRIDGE • Sandy HOPES • Mary LENNOX • Helen LENNOX • Jeff GRAHAM • Samuel KING • Amy WATSON

vols

In other news, please can we try and stick to the mud and not widen the tracks, hopefully spring is on its way and the park will start to recover…. In the meantime we do need to try and look after it as best we can.

thumbs up

Finally, next Saturday (8th Feb) we will once again have the opportunity to have a chat and a bacon roll in the 'parkrun café' - this will be held upstairs in the Sports Centre until 10.30am. All proceeds to Wotton Ladies Circle current charity (Southmead NICU).
Please remember to bring a change of shoes!!

Wotton parkrun #165 – 25th January 2020

It was a balmy 6ºC when we arrived to set up parkrun,  it also wasn't raining which is currently an unexpected bonus. Despite it being rather a grey day, 84 brilliant parkrunners arrived raring to go. One of our Silver DofE volunteers, Sam gave a very confident Run Director Briefing and then we were off.

sam

We thanked volunteer marshal Alice Lewis as we passed and congratulated her on her 25th time volunteering - she has now earned her free purple volunteer t-shirt. Well done Alice.

Wotton parkrun #163 – 11th January 2020

It was a blustery affair at Wotton Community Parc this week, and I'm not just talking about RD Mike's run brief! Thankfully the rain stayed away and Wotton parkrun #163 saw 48 runners run, jog and walk through the mud to a triumphant finish.

mike

This week Julie Jenner ran her 100th parkrun at Wotton and in parallel this was her 100th time volunteering at parkrun - congratulations Julie and thank you so much for your support!

selfie

We welcomed 4 new faces to the parkrun family this week, completing their first ever parkrun, and a further three parkrunners were visiting Wotton for the very first time. Welcome! A special mention for Maddy Dawson - her first run at Wotton but her fiftieth parkrun location - great work!

runners

Congratulations must go to the three amazing parkrunners that recorded Personal Best times at this time of year... great effort and we can't wait to see what you can do when the ground dries out later in the year!

colin

Our parkrun wouldn't happen if it wasn't for our amazing volunteers that turn out in all weathers to cheer on our runners and keep them safe, and this week's tremendous twenty were: Naomi Price, Grace Morgan, Kerry Morgan, Ann Fitzjohn, David Fitzjohn, Veronica Higgins, Julie Jenner, Becky Shaw, Pauline Draisey, Michael Brown, Sue Smith, Carl Jenner, Rebecca Flint, Dave Draisey, Helen Lennox, Lucy Shaw, Caroline Badrick, Samuel King & Tess Knowles! Thank you all.

If you would like to volunteer in the future please contact us - wottonhelpers@parkrun.com

vols
Thank you to everyone who kept to the path this week - there isn't a 'dry line' at the moment and you will get muddy, so we would ask you to 'embrace the mud' and stick to the main route in the coming weeks!

Next week due to the fantastic number of pledges to #HealthySwaps by Wotton parkrunners, the Co-op, partners of parkrun UK, will be visiting us and will be handing out goodie boxes as part of their #HealthySwaps initiative - meaning all runners and volunteers will be able to cook themselves a meal after their morning out.

See you there!!
