Wotton parkrun #180 – parkrun Vs Pineapples

Two things of note have happened this week. One of them, I believe, the other I don't.

First up, as run director and being there for it, I am certain that a perfect, delicate Saturday dawned, ready for the 72 runners who came from near and far (well, as far as Gloucester) to enjoy a jaunt round our fabulous 5K course.

What I'm not so sure about is Ann Fitzjohn's pineapple plant. Now, I'd trust Ann with my life but I'm not sure the plant she had on her window sill this week was the pineapple she claimed it to be.

I know that we had 14 first timers at Wotton, including 2 complete first timers but I'm not convinced that you can just twist the leaves off of a pineapple, stick it in water and watch the roots grow, like Ann says you can.

Jane Heryet, Rosie K and Giles Gould were absolutely, definitely among the 13 PBs (see, I told you conditions were good) that went down at parkrun but I can't believe that planting the head of a pineapple in a pot will grow you the whole new pineapple of which Ann speaks.

I can't see that those pineapples grow above the ground as I've been told but it was fab to see the 16 volunteers that helped make parkrun a rip roaring success on Saturday - thanks to Peter CHAFFER, Ann FITZJOHN, Carl JENNER, Julie JENNER, Andy KIRKUP, Stella LAING, Colin LENNOX, Alice LEWIS, Emma MEREDITH, Grace MORGAN, Kerry MORGAN, Jenny NAYLOR, Amanda PEARSON, Laura ROYLE, Liam ROYLE and Amy WATSON.

So. while I haven't got a clue what I think about pineapples and whether I'm being led down the garden path, I'm certain that it was a pleasure to be part of a brilliant parkrun last weekend.

Wotton parkrun #179 – 11th September 2021

The Olympics and Paralympics are all finished, but the return of parkrun is going strong. This week we joined in with Pride in Gloucestershire day and celebrated diversity in the community.

We welcomed 12 new visitors from around Gloucestershire, Bristol and the Cotswolds. Congratulations also to 3 junior and 1 adult first timers on finishing our 5k course.

Biggest milestone of the day was Christine Gordon who completed her 100th event. Well done Christine.

We had a new first Female finisher in Isobel Medcroft. For the males, Freddie B repeated the feat from last month and again dipped under 20 minutes, despite the blustery wind.

Highest age grade was Tim Smith with 73% after beating his Wotton PB from June 2019. Eight others also improved their PBs this week.

This week's magnificent volunteers were Ann Fitzjohn, David Fitzjohn, Eileen Hieron, Graham Owens, James Trott, Jeremy Hull, John Hieron, Julie Jenner, Kerry Morgan, Laura Royle, Liam Royle, Mary Robinson, Nicola Derrick, Patrick Comer, Pete Wintle, Pip Marrow and Sheila Turner.

We welcomed 15 parkrunners to Wotton for the very first time, including Oscar N who led the field out from the start and ran strongly to become first finisher in a time of 19:00 - a superb effort.

In fact, the efforts shown by all of the junior runners at Wotton parkrun this week (as every week) were truly impressive! Well done to you all!

12 parkrunners recorded new Personal Bests, including Finn B and Freddie H who paced former Wotton parkrun event director (and on this occasion responsible adult) Tom to knock minutes of their times. Well done guys!

Wotton parkrun #177 – 28th August 2021

What a beautiful warm and sunny day for our August Bank Holiday parkrun!! (just kidding). Well the weather stayed dry but it was a little dull and chilly for the time of year however, those of us volunteering were warmed up by the happy smiles of the 78 parkrunners as they passed and we clapped!!

We welcomed 19 newcomers to Wotton - three of whom were doing their first ever parkrun. Our conditions are still perfect for a parkrun PB and this week we saw 9 people achieve theirs. Tourists had come to run the famous Wotton butterfly from Thornbury, Bognor Regis, Rhondda Valley, Exeter, Ashton Court and the Forest of Dean. We hope you return again sometime.

Congratulations to Wotton first-time visitor Joe Gillett who was our first finisher in a time of 19:40 and to our very own Rebecca Flint who was first female finisher with a time of 24:52.

Our brilliant parkrun would not happen without those people who volunteer - this week we were grateful to the crew of Neil BARRETTKevin BROCKWAYRachel BROWNPauline DRAISEYAnn FITZJOHNDavid FITZJOHNSarah HASSANJohn HIERONPaul JONESVictoria JONESCatherine KNOWLESNicola LEWTONPip MARROWKerry MORGANAndrew PRICENaomi PRICELaura ROYLE and Liam ROYLE

Wotton parkrun #176 – 21st August 2021

At our 5th event back since the post-lockdown restart, it almost felt "normal" again to be welcoming 72 runners, together with volunteers and supporters, at 9am on a Saturday. The threatened deluge did not appear until later, which left good conditions for running. It also made for easier social distancing.

Congratulations to Margaret Sales who achieved the milestone of 300 finishes overall (and her 125th at Wotton).

Well done also the 6 first time parkrunners for getting round the course so impressively. We were pleased to welcome 11 first time visitors from around the country including Derbyshire, East Devon, London, Merseyside, Yorkshire and South Wales. Thank you for your positive feedback and appreciation.

Nine runners beat their previous Wotton PBs, including Stephen Biles who knocked another 20 seconds off from 4 weeks ago. However that wasn't enough to catch visitor and first time visitor Jack Pitcher. He ran the fastest time at Wotton since October 2019.

Another visitor Sue Harrison set the first Wotton age-category record in over 2 years, running 26:45 in the VW65-69 section.

Many thanks for their excellent support to this week's great volunteers Patrick Comer, Aaron McTear, Ann Fitzjohn, Becky Shaw, Chris Fisher, David Fitzjohn, Eileen Hieron, Grace Morgan, Helen Lennox, Jeremy Hull, John Hieron, Jude Rugman, Julie Jenner, Katie Pinnington, Kerry Morgan, Pip Marrow, Simon Pinnington and Stella Laing. We need marshals and other roles every week so please come and give it a go soon.

If you would like to volunteer this coming Saturday or anytime in the future please contact wotton@parkrun.com

Thanks to Ann & Dave Fitzjohn for this weeks' photographs

Wotton parkrun #175 – Kids These Days!

So, after more or less 16 months off, all of us adults religiously getting out for our 'hour of exercise' and bounding back to parkrun refreshed, re-energised and re-ready to knock parkrun out of the, erm, park - what 'appens? Those pesky kids, that's what 'appens. After 16 months glued to their consoles, never seeing the light of day and surviving on cereals and crisps, you'd think we'd be able to show them a thing or two about this running about malarky but, no, not a chance, they absolutely smashed it. Chapeau!

In great conditions, Steffan B (J15 - 17) crusied comfortably round in 20:03 to finish first, showing the old guard of the likes of Matt Hazel-Livall and Tom Beasley (our youngest runner in the 40-44 age group at just 28 years old!) a thing or two while Harry D-P (J11-14) kept the front runners on their toes with a superb 21:14.

Alex K (J10) kept his dad honest with an excellent 24:19, although Phil did have the small matter of a top ten finish in a trail marathon to attend to the next day so maybe us adults weren't doing too badly.

Out of the 84 runners, there were a glorious 28 first timers, including visitors from South Africa. 10 PBs were achieved, including Julie Jenner, Catherine Dack and Jane Heryet, helping to restore the 'kids getting all the glory' balance.

Paul Sales racked up his 300th parkrun and Tom Beasley racked up his 50th - congratulations, both.

None of this marvellous-ness of running about from parkrunners of all ages would've been possible without our fantastic volunteers who set up, cheered, timed and scanned - Kirsty BEASLEY, Paul CHAFFER, Pauline DODD, Ann FITZJOHN, David FITZJOHN, Harry FITZJOHN, Rebecca FLINT, Diana GORE, Eileen HIERON, John HIERON, Carl JENNER, Julie JENNER, Paul JONES, Andy KIRKUP, Jackie PENNINGTON, Karen RAYFIELD, Laura ROYLE, Liam ROYLE, Sue SMITH, Nicki WADE - thank you, you fabsters!

With great runs from all our athletes and a great atmosphere, parkrun definitely did knock itself out of the park!

Wotton parkrun #174 – 7th August 2021

This week was the first attempt at Run Directing by Naomi and Andrew PRICE, under the careful supervision of Ann and Dave!

Wotton parkrun #174 was blessed with good conditions for a Saturday morning trot around Wotton Community PARC, which was reflected in the 14 PBs recorded, including an impressive 19:24 for Freddie Brown who was first home.  First female, Rosie Brown, also smashed a PB time of 25:59…well done both! Congratulations also go to Paul Jones who became our latest member of the 50 Club - we look forward to seeing that new red t-shirt !!We saw another increase in participants; up from 83 last week to 92 – helped out in no small part by an impressive contingent of 10 members of the Lliswerry Runners from across the Bridge.

It was great to see 24 new faces at the PARC, including tourists from Chippenham, South Wales and even a run director all the way from Munich, Germany (via Newcastle!).

The event couldn’t have gone ahead without recognising a couple of important dates - Fr Chris Kinch celebrating a 'big' birthday by smashing his new age grading with a time of 20:02, and of course the wedding anniversary of co-Event Directors Ann and Dave Fitzjohn.

Ann and Dave were part of the team of 18 willing and able volunteers making up our ever important team of hi-viz heroes.  This squad of superstars included; Kirsty BEASLEYPauline DRAISEYAnn FITZJOHNDavid FITZJOHNJulie FROGGATTAndrew Stephen GRAYRenate HARPERJohn HIERONAlice LEWISPip MARROWEmma MEREDITHJenny NAYLORAndrew PRICENaomi PRICETed PRICEPaul David SALES, Claire SEARLE and Nigel VAUGHAN.

Thank you to all the volunteers – we couldn’t do it without you – literally!

Wotton parkrun #173 – 31st July 2021

Overcast but not overawed.. 83 parkrunners and 18 enthusiastic volunteers, including one slightly rusty run director, headed to the Community PARC on Saturday to traverse the beautifully cut course for the feast of running, walking (and for William - buggy pushing) that was Wotton parkrun #173.

The socially distanced throng waited patiently as RD Mike managed not to fall off the step whilst delivering the run briefing, and at the sound of the PB bell they were off around the PARC, cheered along the way by our hi-viz heroes.... Colin Lennox, Zosia Young, Andy Kirkup Grace Morgan, Stephen Biles, Kerry Morgan, Ann Fitzjohn, David Fitzjohn, Diana Gore, Jackie Pennington, Harry Fitzjohn, Ruth Gibson, Julie Jenner, Becky Shaw, Daniella Macdonald, Michael Brown, Pete Wintle and Samuel King. Thank you all for your support - we couldn't do it without you.

In the pack this week we welcomed 16 runners taking on the Wotton Butterfly for the first time including William, Freddie, Martyn and Linda who were running their very first parkrun - great work and welcome to the parkrun family! We were pleased to welcome parkrun tourists from as far away from Beverley, and from a number of our neighboring events - it was fantastic to see you all and we'd love for you to visit us again!

Congratulations to all our parkrunners that made it this week and a special shout out to the 12 that achieved Personal Bests. First home was Simon Pinnington in a time of 20:21 and first female finisher was Katie Jenner with a new Wotton PB of 24:05 - well done!

Once again it was amazing to be back at Wotton parkrun - good to welcome so many old and new faces, all smiling but importantly all having a good time! See you again next week!

Wotton parkrun #172 – 24th July 2021- Welcome Back!!

Well, after 70 weeks off....we're back!! Such a brilliant morning. We were all expecting rain but thankfully none materialised though sadly the overnight showers hadn't re-filled the water-splash! There was a really great buzz around the start area with everyone politely distancing themselves or standing in family groups.

After a very quick run briefing, the field of 63 parkrunners were off. Lots of happy smiling faces greeted John who was back marshalling on his favourite corner along with lots of new flags. Wishes were also aimed at marshal Eileen who's birthday (somewhere between 78 and 80) was coming up on Sunday.

We welcomed three brand new parkrunners - Harry, Hugo and Kath plus 4 people who were visiting Wotton for the first time. You picked a great time of year to visit but we really recommend a winter trip as well - hope to see you all back again sometime in the future.

Congratulations to Mary Lennox and Emily R for completing parkrun number 50, and to Katie Pinnington for completing parkrun number 350. We had an astonishing 12 PBs which means some people have been keeping very fit during lockdown.

First finisher Stephen Biles was only 10 seconds off of his PB and First female finisher, Maddy Dawson took a staggering 2 minutes 16 secs off of her PB - well done to both of you.

It was fantastic to have a full compliment of volunteers which allowed us marshals on most corners - thanks very much to Peter CHAFFER • Rich WILSHER • Andy KIRKUP • Kate WOODROW • Eileen HIERON • John HIERON • Grace MORGAN • Garry STRICKLAND • Tracey STRICKLAND • Kerry MORGAN • Ann FITZJOHN • David FITZJOHN • Victoria JONES • Tim SMITH • Jeremy HULL • Julie JENNER • Stella LAING • Sue SMITH • Paul JONES • Philip KIRK • Jenny NAYLOR • Nigel VAUGHAN • Catherine KNOWLES • Luke NAYLOR

Wotton parkrun #171 – 14th March 2020 – School’s Out!

"Bonjour, la classe!

"OK, settle down, I know it's an unexpected end of term but there're still a few things to do. Firstly, let's do a quick head count and see how many are in parkrun school today - 1, 2, 3...47, 48 eager faces. Well, hello, any new faces, put yer hand up? Oh, hi, you're from Chippenham and Cirencester. Well, welcome to Wotton parkrun - Tim Smith, if you don't stop talking, I won't let you have a PB later!

"Right, sorry, welcome to Wotton, one and all. "Now, as you know, with no thanks to coronavirus there won't be any parkruns for the foreseeable future. So, as you'd expect at parkrun school, I've got some homework for you. There are two subjects to do this week, French and PE, and more to follow over the coming weeks. Photographic evidence of the PE homework being undertaken (at a safe distance from others) would help inspire us all so make sure you post them on our Farcebook page.
