14/01/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #73 Cleobury Mortimer Running Club take over and show you how volunteering works

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 73
14th January 2017

This Saturday we had our first ever 'volunteer takeover'. As you know, most of the core team are with Cleobury Mortimer Running Club so we thought it time to get a few of those club members who'd not volunteered before to see what it was like and get involved too.

Joined on the day by a couple of non-members (including Mark Wallace who took most of the fabulous photographs of the event - great job thanks Mark), we broke our previous record for volunteer numbers (which was at an inaugural event back in August 2015!)

As both RD on Saturday and a coach at CMRC I'd like to personally say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped us out this week:

Adrian FORD • Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Ann WEBBER • Cerys ROWLES • Debbie PRICE • Donna PERRY • Finlay BRITNELL • Jayne SWIFT • Jennet ROBERTS • Joanne WATSON • Kim HOOD • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Lisa BAILEY • Lisa BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Lisa HALLIDAY • Mark WALLACE • Martin BIGGS • Michelle BRIGGS • Rose WATSON • Sallie SHAW • Sara HARRIS • Sarah TAYLOR • Sian POWELL • Vicky HONEYBOURNE

Cleobury Mortimer Running Club was established in September 2015, just after Wyre Forest parkrun and the two have a lot in common. As I said, most of our core team are from CMRC and I think its safe to say that without the commitment, enthusiasm and vision of my friends at the club we would not have got Wyre Forest parkrun off the ground when we did. Wyre Forest District Council had got the funding and a location in place for a year before we were approached about running it.

Myself and a few Cleobury runners had heard volunteers were needed so we contacted our ambassador Richard Ralphs and got our names on the list. Dale (Wyre Forest DC Sports Development Officer who approached us) said he was nearly at the point of giving up on it when we stepped in. As soon as I knew an Event Director was needed so that we could get started I volunteered immediately knowing that I had plenty of support alongside me.

At that time we were just a group of social runners but we knew that once a local parkrun was established, participation at all our local running clubs would increase so we needed to become more structured and so CMRC was born. At that time there were very few of us and so it made sense for us to approach another club about helping us out, and so we became a 'satellite club' to Ludlow Runners. This means our members are also members of Ludlow Runners and vice-versa and we are part of a UKA registered club.

Since then myself and Jo have trained as UKA coaches and along with other qualified leaders (and more to follow) we have grown the club to over 40 paid up members! We have staged 4 learn-to-run courses and start our 5th this week. Since that first course we have taken non-runners to 10k, half-marathon, marathon and even ultra distance! So we are quite pleased with our little (but getting bigger!) club.

But one of our proudest achievements is Wyre Forest parkrun. I think when we look back we didn't imagine how important and special it would become to us. We've met so many amazing and inspirational people, made friendships that will last a lifetime, changed our (and other peoples) perceptions about running (and runners!), exchanged lie-ins for standing in the rain cheering...the list goes on. Speaking just for myself, getting involved with Wyre Forest parkrun and CMRC was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Anyway, enough of the sentimentality! If you'd like to know more about CMRC you can contact us at run@runcleobury.org or visit Cleobury Mortimer Running Club

We currently offer coached/lead sessions for all abilities on Tuesdays at 7pm, meeting at 6.50pm at Teme Leisure (Cleobury Mortimer) Sports Hall. We are fully inclusive and no one is ever left behind. We also enjoy the social side of running and organise regular social evenings as well as entering the odd (!) race together.

Some of the great people we've met at parkrun are the awesome Forest Monsters! They can't be missed in their orange kit and this week was a celebration run for two special ladies. Tina SMITH completed her milestone 50th parkrun so can now claim her free RED t-shirt! And Helena ASHWIN joined in the fun as she celebrated her birthday. Looking great ladies!! Hope you both had a fab morning.

The following all joined us for the first time - well done you are all parkrunners now!

Matt BALDOCK, Josh BOND, Shaun WILTSHERE, Charlie KENNAN, Wayne, KENNAN, Ben KENNAN, Craig DOLAN, Georgia MACE, Aaron MASON, Xena GOULD, Elizabeth GOULD, Mark THOMAS, Andy JUDD, Olivia MORTON, Kirsty TRACEY, Alexandra LINNEY, Keith GUEST, Maria MIHAJLOVIC.

I also wanted to give a special mention to Paul ROBERTS. Paul went to try some parkrun tourism this week but sadly Hanbury Hall was cancelled. He arrived there, realised and drove back to Wyre Forest. Arrived here at 9.30am and still ran the 5k just making it back before our tailrunner!! What a hero! Well done Paul.

Mark took some brilliant photos this week, showing how parkrun works from the volunteer perspective. So heres a selection:

Simple!

So thank you once again to Mark for the photos and CMRC for providing the volunteers for another fab parkrun.

We look forward to future takeovers - details on the calendar at the bottom but thank you to Tri-Energy, Bridgnorth Running Club and Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers who have all got dates in the diary for February and March to take over the roster and Amazing Feet who are also looking at dates! Exciting stuff. We are lucky to have so many great clubs in our area.

Thanks for reading, it was quite a long one - see you next time
Andie
