It was a very chilly run this week so thanks to all those amazing volunteers once again.

So where do I start with this week's run report? We had several important milestones and three big birthdays to celebrate this week. Cake, balloons and fancy dress were in abundance!

I think we should start with our oldest EVER parkrunner - the local (Wolverley) legend that is Lindsay B PULLEY. Lindsay turned 80 this Saturday and despite partying the night before with his Cleobury Running Club friends, he and several of them turned up (some more bleary eyed than others) to join Lindsay and his son Nick (home parkrun Rushcliffe) on his 225th parkrun.

DSC_0434

DSC_1901

Lindsay is of course very well known in the local running community as the man who founded Amazing Feet Running Club (Kidderminster) and has then ran for Dudley Kingswinford and Midland Masters AC before recently joining CMRC.

At 80, Lindsay becomes an Age Category Record holder at Wyre Forest with his time of 35:24. He was just jogging so he will no doubt beat his own record when he next tries!

At the other end of the age scale we also celebrated Adam SCURRELL's 16th Birthday! And Adam was also running his 100th parkrun - a milestone he shared with mum MICHELLE (Shelly)! I said it was a busy week....! Congratulations Adam and Shelly (of Tri Energy) and thank you for all the volunteering you do too.

Untitled

Matthew BAILEY was also running his 100th parkrun this week - he joined Lindsay and his CMRC club mates to complete his milestone in a more leisurely fashion than usual (Matt is no stranger to the P001 token!) and thanks to wife ROWAN we all enjoyed some delicious cakes afterwards! Congratulations Matt.

Next up was another Wyre Forest regular Tony COLCLOUGH (aka Frosty) of the Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers - he was also running his 100th parkrun and his club mates carried on their usual tradition with a themed parkrun - this week FLAMINGOES!

DSC_1905

DSC_1893

Congratulations also to junior Daniel WALLIS who completed his 10th parkrun, Jemima SHELDON and Mark SHELDON who ran their 50th parkruns and our lovely Debbie HYRONS (token sorter extraordinaire!) who also ran her 50th parkrun as volunteer sign collector.

Photo: Our fab Debbie at the end of this week's run

We also wished a Happy 65th Birthday to camera shy Chris HANCOX!

I really hope I haven't missed anyone!

And finally - I couldn't resist sharing this photograph! Titled "When you manage to beat the course record holder over 100m dressed as a flamingo"! Thank you Mark WALLACE for this classic moment and to photographer Gav MILLICHIP for capturing it perfectly!

DSC_1812

It's going to be hard to top all these celebrations but I'm sure you'll all help us try as we celebrate Christmas this week with our usual festive fancy dress parkrun. We will bring cakes and music, we just need you to bring the fun! Oh and your barcodes too of course!

See you there
Andie

1/12/2018 Wyre Forest parkrun #168 muddy fun in the pouring rain

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 168
1st December 2018

This week just 129 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 9 were first timers and 17 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 20 different clubs took part. The weather was pretty appalling and it wasn't surprising that numbers were noticeably down on usual!

Photo: It was a tad muddy out there!

In fact we only had two brave first timers this week, well done to Jo LIST and Karl TIBBETTS for still turning up despite the conditions!!

The event was made possible by 24 volunteers who we should really give extra thanks too this week, many of whom were out in the rain from 8:30am to get to their marshal points. We really are incredibly grateful to you all:

Nigel GARDNER • David MORE • Mark WALLACE • Andrea FORD • Neil CRABBE • Andrew GARLICK • Katy BROOME • Duncan STARKIE • Lisa BIGGS • Martin BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Aran MOORE • Matt KIMBER • Heather MORGAN • John FRANCIS • Paul SCURRELL • Adam SCURRELL • Michael GREGG • Pauline SMITH • Caz SMITH • Katherine EVANS • Catherine WILLIAMS • Steve REDDING • Maisie WHITE

We celebrated one milestone this week - Wyre Forest regular Carl PRICE completed his 100th parkrun. Carl is also a regular volunteer so from all of us - CONGRATULATIONS and thank you Carl!

Please don't forget that this Saturday coming (December 8th) we will be collecting donations for Kidderminster Foodbank. As Graeme told us in the briefing, this is s difficult time of year for many and they are short on quite a few items particularly: Toilet rolls, women's sanitary products, toiletries, tin openers, nappies and baby food. But of course - all food is welcome so please donate what you can! Thank you.

06/10/2018 Wyre forest parkrun #160 National parkrun day: A day for heroes

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 160
6th October 2018

This week on 'National parkrun day' 150 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 13 were first timers and 23 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 20 different clubs took part.

Untitled
Photo: Our awesome volunteers sheltering before the run

The weather was pretty frightful this morning, cold with heavy rain and numbers were unsurprisingly down on usual. But even so a handful of brave souls turned up to complete their first ever parkrun! Well done all:

Dominic WILDE, Reuben SABEL, Lachlan WILTON, Eloise PARMENTER-POYNER, Eartha KRUFT WELTON, Raymond PRICKETT

Special congratulations to Neil JARVIS on your 50th parkrun today.

Yes, today marked 14 years since Paul Sinton-Hewitt and his 12 parkrun pioneers ran the first Bushy Park 5k time trial, what we now know as parkrun. Since then those 13 have grown to over 5 million registered parkrunners worldwide. And for the record, that includes the awesome 3,556 of you that have registered Wyre Forest as your home run.

Untitled

So today it seems fitting to reflect on a couple of our own parkrunners - at different points in their parkrun journeys.

We heard about Raymond PRICKETT from RD Graeme during the briefing and his journey to his debut parkrun. Ray suffered a heart attack a year ago. He had smoked heavily for 50 years, not really looked after himself and his heart attack resulted in lifesaving triple heart bypass surgery. Ray has now got himself much fitter and today ran his first ever parkrun! What an inspiration. Hopefully Ray will become a regular at Wyre Forest.

Untitled
Photo: Ray before his first parkrun

Another parkrun success story is my CMRC club mate Ben PARKES. Ben ran his first parkrun exactly a year ago. On that day it took him 36:06 but he was hooked and came back the following week, and the week after that...you know how it goes! In early 2018 Ben joined us at Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and continued to chip away at his parkrun time (and on one occasion running the course 3 times as a long run with a parkrun PB in the middle!)

This week he asked his club mates to help to get him another PB - which would take him to under 26 minutes and therefore mean he had taken 10 minutes off his original finish time in a year. It was a big ask (he'd need to take another 30 seconds off a PB he set just last week!) but I am proud to report that he did it this morning finishing in a time of 25:48! I hear that his pacing team were pretty tough with him so extra well done to you Ben, a true parkrun success story.

Untitled
Photo: Ben celebrating his new parkrun PB!

And of course we can not forget our super volunteers, the real heroes today. It was tough running in it but these guys were stood still in the downpour. We are incredibly grateful to you all:

Nigel GARDNER • Phil DOLPHIN • Shirley THOMAS • Mark WALLACE • Helen RUTHERFORD • Andrea FORD • Jake GOOD • Alison MACDONALD • Neil CRABBE • Katy BROOME • Graeme ANDERSON • Tom ANDERSON • Lindsay TILLSLEY • John FRANCIS • Vicki KELLY • Robin LAMBE • Luisa TURNER • Rachael SHEPHERD • David ALLISTON • Ruth ALLISTON • Graham GOOD • Maria MIHAJLOVIC • Sasha GUEST • Daren JACKSON • Pauline SMITH • Caz SMITH • Charlie SMITH • Debbie REDDING • Patrick YARRANTON-GREEN

Untitled

Untitled

Without volunteers, there is no Wyre Forest parkrun so please don't forget to do your bit. It may seem scary or you may not want to miss your run but all the roles are super easy and some jobs can be done before and after so you get to run too! Get in touch at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com, thank you.

Don't forget that we will be celebrating Halloween on October 27th with our spooky spectacular themed run so start thinking about those costumes now!

Thanks for reading, happy running,
Andie

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 155
1st September 2018

As summer turns to autumn, we are very lucky in that we are still experiencing some lovely weather, and it was a beautiful morning in the forest! 25 lovely volunteers turned up to facilitate this mornings run. Please give thanks to:

Ian DENNIS • Kim HOOD • Richard FAIN • Mark WALLACE • Philip SHELDON • Andrew T DAVIES • Joanne WATSON • Jake GOOD • Mark REAVES • Neil CRABBE • Katy BROOME • Carole EVANS • Stephen MOORE • Graeme ANDERSON • Tom ANDERSON • Emma PAINE • Steve KIMBER • Gavin MILLICHIP • Jacqui WINTER • Graham GOOD • Daren JACKSON • Wayne GRIFFIN • Pauline SMITH • Lloyd WRIGHT • Christopher HANCOX • Florence HOWARD

Wfpr 1.9.18

This is what our funnel volunteers get up to while you are out running!

Mark Reeves is one of our regular volunteers, but he failed to mention to us on Saturday that he was actually celebrating a milestone achievement! Mark has volunteered 25 times now, making him eligible for one of the much coveted purple parkrun t-shirts! So extra thanks goes out to Mark - your volunteering is much appreciated by us all.

We also had two running milestones being celebrated this week too. Firstly, we had Steven Smith; Steven was celebrating his 100th parkrun! What an achievement - well done! Then we had Mike Parker; Mike was celebrating his 50th parkrun. Huge well done to both of you - we hope to see you both when you are celebrating your next milestone parkrun.

Wfpr 1.9.18

Wfpr 1.9.18

It was also an extra special week this week as we welcomed a special visitor to Wyre Forest parkrun. Taekwondo athlete, Maddison Moore, from Team GB, joined us in the forest and she also volunteered! Maddison tail walked at our event which was also her first ever parkrun. Thank you so much for visiting us Maddison! We also learnt that Maddison's aunty, Helen Rutherford, is one of our parkrunners, so maybe Maddison will come back and visit us again, and run with 'aunty Helen' as we all now know her!

Wfpr 1.9.18

Maddison with RD Graeme

I shall now hand over to the far more capable, 11 year old Florence Howard, for the rest of todays run report!

Today was my second run of freedom now I'm 11. I can finally leave my mum far behind. Although today I didn't take on that opportunity!! I find it easier running with someone who has a similar pace. So definitely not my mum!!! (Sorry!) I did my current P.B a long time ago with my best friend, Eva, and whenever I wanted to stop she would be running and it would motivate you to keep running and achieve your best. Most of the time now in my mind I just have to imagine her running next to me. It's definitely encouraging when there is so many people around you cheering you on! Marshalls are always calling you on to keep going. What's inspiring is when other runners cheer you on too! This makes you feel great! When you come up Cardiac Hill you can hear everyone cheering you on! I don't know whether this is just me or relatable but when you run up that hill and you feel like you can't go on anymore and when you all of sudden hear cheering it definitely feels amazing like you've achieved something for the first time (if it is or if its not). For a few seconds you almost don't care what time you get as you go through the funnel. After that you just can't wait for those results! That email/ text, you just want to come quickly really badly as if your waiting for Christmas. Thank You to the Run Director, Marshalls and all the other Volunteers that make these parkruns possible.

Thank you Florence! What a fabulous run report! And if anyone else would like to write a run report for us, please get in touch.

This week 207 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 40 were first timers and 38 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 22 different clubs took part. Well done to you all, but especially our first timers; we hope to see you again soon. Two of the people celebrating PBs were Matthew Bailey and Chris Foster, both from Cleobury Mortimer Running Club. These two incredibly quick runners ran the whole course together, and crossed the line at the exact same moment to take positions 1 and 2. Well done to you both!

See you all soon!

25/08/2018 Wyre Forest parkrun #154 Happy 3rd birthday to us!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 154
25th August 2018

Happy 3rd birthday to Wyre Forest parkrun!

This week was an extra special week for us as we celebrated our 3rd birthday. We celebrated with a superhero theme and it was great to see so many of our volunteers and runners dressed up in superhero costumes! We had everyone from Batman and Robin, to Superman and Superwoman; we had Wonder woman, Banana man and Spiderman; we even had a ninja turtle and a dinosaur!  We love it when you embrace our themes, and it made us very happy to see the forest full of superheroes, so thank you!

Wfpr 25.8.18

Some of our 'Super' core team today.

Thank you to those of you that donated cakes also - they were very much appreciated and enjoyed by everyone! It always helps our runners to get up Cardiac Hill, knowing there is cake at the finish line!

Untitled

This week 214 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 36 were first timers! We hoped you enjoyed your first run in our beautiful forest and we look forward to seeing you again soon. 40 people also recorded new Personal Bests - Congratulations! Was it down to the added super powers the costume wearers brought with them, or the promise of cake at the end? Maybe a little bit of both!

As always, the event was made only made possible by our high viz heroes. This week we need to say thank you to:

Maria PALI • Vicky HONEYBOURNE • Kim HOOD • Mark WALLACE • Philip SHELDON • Joanne WATSON • Jake GOOD • Fiona CLARKE • Vicki HULME • Mark REAVES • Neil CRABBE • Andrew GARLICK • Katy BROOME • Lisa GARLICK • Graeme ANDERSON • Tom ANDERSON • Heather MORGAN • Luisa TURNER • Gavin MILLICHIP • Carole HENDER • Daren JACKSON • Pauline SMITH • Simone BUZINK • Trish LONGMORE • Lloyd WRIGHT • Christopher HANCOX

Volunteer of the year

One of the best things about our birthday is that it is that we get to award our 'Volunteer of the year' award! In the past we have had very worthy winners; Bill Biggs in 2016, and Lisa and Andy Garlick in 2017, all of whom still regularly volunteer most weeks. This year we were very proud to award our 'Volunteer of the year' award to the very lovely Pauline Smith!

Pauline started volunteering with us in February 2017. Since then she has volunteered a staggering 51 times! She has volunteered 36 times in the past 12 months alone - this is more than any other person! She has completed 13 parkruns herself, many of these in the volunteer role of 'tailwalker'. When we were struggling for volunteers last week, she quickly came to our rescue too! She signed her partner up to parkrun and we sent him out marshalling! Clearly Pauline is a very inspiring lady, and she is doing good work spreading the volunteering love. She is a member of both Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and Tri-Energy, and her own running is going from strength to strength. She has no idea how special she is to us all, and when I was announcing the award on Saturday, she didn't realise it was for her until the very last minute! Pauline is a wonderful lady and we are so proud of her. Please give her a big huge 'thank you' when you see her. She will be volunteering, as usual, again next week.

We also need to say a big congratulations to Darryl Carter who achieved a new age category record for the VM45-49 category with us on Saturday. Darryl ran an incredible time of 17:49! Congratulations Darryl, that is a brilliant achievement.

Congratulations also to Edward Southan and Stephen Brown who both ran their 50th parkruns! If you are celebrating a milestone parkrun, please let us know so we can give you a shoutout in our briefing.

As I mentioned earlier, we saw some fabulous costumes for our birthday parkrun! I am going to leave you with a few of my favourites!

I had a rare opportunity to run this week - and that is because of the wonderful volunteers who replied to my email for assistance in filling the roster this week. Please remember if you have not yet volunteered that parkrun only exists because other parkrunners give up their run in exchange for a role.

If we all take our turns regularly then the roster would be full several weeks in advance and my job would be lots easier. So don't wait until Friday night to look at the roster - do your bit and keep our wonderful event going. Thank you. Like me - you can get a volunteer credit for writing this run report (which as you can see, doesn't have to be long!)

Don't forget that next week we celebrate our third birthday! Where has the time gone...it seems like only yesterday that we were nervously preparing for our inaugural.

As I am writing this and thinking back over the last three years I can honestly say that parkrun has changed my life. I hope that doesn't sound silly, because its true. Without it I would not have met and been inspired by so many amazing people. Wyre Forest parkrun is an important part of our family life now, something that we all do together and look forward to and something that above all else, I am incredibly proud of. I'm not sure what we'd do on a Saturday if parkrun wasn't around!

So thank you to everyone who has ran, jogged, walked, supported and (most importantly to me!) volunteered over these last 3 years as you've all made it incredibly special. As I can't be with you next week I'll take the opportunity now to say "Happy Birthday" and hope you all have a fabulous parkrun (and lots of cake!)

Speaking of which....our core team are not renowned for their baking skills I'm afraid! We will buy a couple of cakes but we know that we have lots of talented bakers amongst our parkrun community so if anyone would like to bring along anything to contribute to the party then please do!

The theme is Super Heroes so don't forget those capes, masks and pants on the outside!

See you all in a couple of weeks and once again - THANK YOU!

28/07/2018 Wyre Forest parkrun #150 A touch of glamour for a Saturday morning!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 150
28th July 2018

This week 217 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 33 were first timers and 36 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 30 different clubs took part.

Here are the names of our marvellous first time parkrunners:

Lloyd WRIGHT, Billy HARLEY, Simon PUGH, William BEARD, Sarah PUGH, Francesca HALL, Ade CALDWELL, Martin GREAVES, Edward LUPTON, Toby GITTENS, Tamzin RICHARDSON

Well done all of you, you now have a PB to beat!

The event was made possible by 23 fantastic volunteers:

Vicky HONEYBOURNE • Adam HARRIS • Julie GOLDS • Mark WALLACE • Julie WIDDOWSON • Andrew T DAVIES • Joanne WATSON • Jake GOOD • Lisa BAILEY • Andrew GARLICK • Katy BROOME • Carole EVANS • Lisa BIGGS • Martin BIGGS • Sandra PEDERSEN • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Gavin MILLICHIP • Sara HARRIS • Rachael SHEPHERD • Michelle BRIGGS • Stuart BIRD • Gill JONES • Steve REDDING

Thank you all - there is no parkrun without volunteers. Have you tried it yet? Please get in touch at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com and let some of our regular volunteers have a go at running too!

There were some memorable milestones this week among some of our loyal Wyre Forest parkrunners and volunteers. Huge congratulations to our favourite mini-marshal Ryan MORGAN who ran his 10th parkrun and to the following, huge kudos on your 100th parkruns: Thomas PALMER (of local Kidderminster and Stourport Athletics Club), Heather MORGAN (Cleobury Mortimer RC and WFHHH) and Graeme ANDERSON (one of our RDs and member of WFHHH).

Graeme and Heather chose a theme of 'red dresses' for their 100th which many more of you embraced! I will let the photographs speak for themselves!

An Age Category Record was claimed this week by the super speedy Fred SMITH of Wolverhampton and Bilston AC who visited us for the first time. The record for VM70-74 now stands at a very impressive 25:09 if any of you chaps fancy beating it?!

Please note that this week, the parking machines at the Forestry were finally upgraded and prices have gone up to £3 for 1 hour (full charges are below). We appreciate that this is frustrating but we are volunteers (paying to park ourselves!) and would prefer that any dissatisfaction is NOT directed at us and that you contact the FC directly with your feedback.

On the same note, please try to avoid parking near to local residents homes. This will create stress to our neighbours who will also take their annoyance out on our volunteers.

If you are a regular parkrunner we really urge you to purchase a Discovery Pass. It is £30 for a year so if you manage to run every week that is just 58p. If you share the cost with another driver (you can add two registration numbers on to the pass) then that is even greater value for money. It also entitles you to discounts at the café and in GoApe (Ts&Cs apply) and you can come and visit whenever you like and support the valuable work that the FC are doing. I know that I can not speak for everyone but I for one truly appreciate how blessed we are to be able to parkrun here each week (and your parkrun itself is absolutely free don't forget!) in such beautiful surroundings and with the use of pre and post-run facilities (some parkruns don't even have toilets available!)

This Saturday sees our favourite photographer celebrate not one but TWO milestones and we welcome a new Run Director to our team! Who will it be?? Come along and see - and don't forget your barcodes!

Keep parkrunning
Andie
