06/07/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #199 and we have a PB Bell!!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 199
6th July 2019

It was a deceptively warm morning this week as  215 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 26 were first timers and 36 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 18 different clubs took part.

Well done to these fabulous first time parkrunners:

Adrian JONES, Rio BILL, Luke WORTHINGTON, Joshua GLAZE, Richard DUDLEY, Andrew GLAZE, Annette ROBINSON, Jodi LEEK, Richard BROOMFIELD, Jessica DAVIS, Chloe PALMER, Joanne TILL, Polly FISHER-EDWARDS, Megan WARD, Nick INSULL, Charlotte STELLING

Congratulations particularly to the group that joined us from Tri-Energy for their C25k Graduation Run.

We were thrilled to be donated a PB Bell by Mark WALLACE and it was great to hear it being rung! Here is Archie GOULDING celebrating his new Personal Best!

Today was my 150th time as a parkrun volunteer and I also got to run for the 35th time by offering to write this run report. There are a few jobs that you can do to earn a run credit and volunteer credit for on the same day!:

  • Pre-event set-up (after training is given)
  • First Timers Briefing (we have notes so it's very easy!)
  • Tail Walker
  • Post Event Close Down
  • Run Report Writer

Writing the Run Report isn't difficult. We just like to hear about your parkrun from your perspective! Then we add in the facts and figures and upload it - voila! Simple.

As I'm writing the run report this week I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to all our volunteers who have given up their time as we approach our 200th run! Where has all that time gone?? We have had 593 different volunteers who have given up their time on 4,803 different occasions! So that covers many hours of marshaling, time keeping and scanning among other things!

Have you volunteered yet? If not, ask yourself - why not? If it's because you're not sure what it entails or you think it's too difficult please come and talk to one of our team and we can explain what happens, you could shadow someone for a little while after your run. There are roles to suit everyone and it really is very rewarding to give something back.

www.wyreforest@parkrun is the address to get involved!

My goal is to now try and run 50 parkruns before the end of the year (I'm definitely playing catch up!) and I couldn't do that with out a fabulous team of core volunteers, regulars and Run Directors who have enabled me to lighten the load this year. Big thank you to fellow RDs Jo WATSON, Graeme ANDERSON, Andy GARLICK, Neil CRABBE, Mark REAVES and David STARKIE in particular!

And finally, you all know by now that we are lucky enough to have a junior parkrun starting soon! Thank you so much to Shirley THOMAS and her team for getting it off the ground! Wyre Forest juniors will hold it's inaugural run on Sunday July 21st at 9am and all children 4-14 are welcome to attend so get them registered and barcodes printed ready! I attended the practice run and my girls really enjoyed it, it's going to be great fun!

So, it's our 200th parkrun this Saturday (already??!) and we have chosen a theme of SUMMER which should be easy for everyone to join in with. Keep it simple and wear your sunglasses or go all out and come in your best Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts! We love to see what you come up with is as always.

See you next time all,

Andie

Well done to Chloe RICHARDSON who this week broke the Age Category Record for SW25-29 - this record now stands at a staggeringly quick 18:29 but we are pretty sure that the awesome Chloe will improve on that in the future!

And Congratulations also to Bev KERNOHAN who completed her milestone 50th parkrun with us!

A huge thank you to everyone who donated items to our collection for Kidderminster Foodbank. Graeme ANDERSON delivered the items this week and of course they were very grateful! Now we have a couple of busy weeks coming up! This Saturday (15th December) we have several important milestones and birthdays being celebrated including the legend that is Lindsay PULLEY's 80th Birthday!! And then the following Saturday (22nd December) it is our Christmas themed run. So please can I ask everyone to arrive nice and early for the briefings on these dates and bring something warm to wear beforehand if necessary. We also impart any important course safety information during the briefing so it is important to listen every week regardless.

If anyone would like to bring cakes/biscuits etc. for the Christmas run then that would also be appreciated! Thank you!

Really looking forward to some fab celebrations over the next couple of weeks with you all! Until then, best wishes (and fingers crossed for NO snow!)

We are now well in to 'holiday season' and we are finding less people are coming forward to volunteer. The core team are being quite stretched and we like to run too now and again! If all of you could help out just once every few months we would easily cover the roster so if you haven't done so yet - email us and get your name on the rota please! We meet at 8.30am and are usually finished around 10am. The address is wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com to do your bit to keep your parkrun going, thank you.

We celebrated some special milestones again this week. Volunteer Neil CRABBE was on duty for the 50th time (no tshirts for volunteering past 25 but thanks certainly is still given!) and Rachel ROBINSON and Eleaner WALL both ran their 50th parkruns. Super kudos must be given to Eleanor as she is only 9!! Very impressive. Well done also to young Megan GATES who completed her 10th milestone. Go get your free t-shirts all!

Next week one of our RDs Graeme ANDERSON and Heather MORGAN of the Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers will be celebrating their 100th parkrun together! As you know if you are a regular at the forest on a Saturday morning, the Hashers likes to celebrate their milestone runs with a bit of fancy dress and Graeme has chosen a special theme of 'red dresses'! Yes that's 'dresses' as in womenswear. Are you brave enough to join it? It should be an entertaining morning - see you there!

Wyre Forest #146 – melting those records!

Thank you to the awesome Pippa WHITE (visiting us from Queen Elizabeth parkrun) for this week's run report!

This report has to start with the fantastic achievement of William RICHARDSON setting a blistering new course record of 15:47 on what must be the hottest parkrun at Wyre Forest yet. The ground conditions were spectacular and his PB sits with the other 36 PBs. Well done to everyone on such a hot day.

Untitled
One to watch: Will Richardson

Well done also to the 30 first time parkrunners including those from TriEnergy graduating from couch to 5k and picking a difficult (ie not flat) first parkrun to complete in the temperatures that should have had us all basking lazily in the sun instead. 11 completed their second parkrun with 7 new PBs and in all 77 of the 217, or approximately 1/3rd were on 10 or fewer parkruns – how lovely to be part of this way to spend a Saturday morning and I wonder if these are more superlative records.

It was my first time at Wyre Forest but this is on my list to come and do again, if only to conquer the hills properly. Drawn to the area by a cool weather decision in cold early April to run the inaugural Cleobury Mortimer 10k on the Sunday, I persuaded my lovely host to show off her beautiful ‘local’ as a leg stretch before the event. For those reading and considering attending, it’s a super one lapper (my fav) with enough shade to be welcome on a hot day, cheerful volunteers and a most splendid café for breakfast and milkshake.

Any parkrun with milestone runs is also fantastic. Well done to juniors Bryn JENKINS and Jack LINNEY on their 10th parkruns. Sandra PEDERSEN completed her 100th and Steve KIMBER his 50th. https://flic.kr/p/K3NA9k May all your links go live soon.

As well as the runners, thanks to those who put their name on the volunteer roster. This event happened because 28 people gave up time and energy to help. As I was, of course, running slowly to save my legs, here are a few pictures of those high viz heroes.

It was a special week this week for several new members of the local Tri Energy Club who graduated from their beginners course by completing their first 5k run. We are really flattered that they chose to celebrate with us as we all know our course is quite a challenging one. But as we also like to remind you all, if you complete it then you really are extra awesome! So massive kudos to all the Tri Energy graduates.

We had two milestone runners this week. Junior Zack McGARRY completed his 10th parkrun (woop woop Zack!) and Roy BRIGHTON ran his 50th parkrun (quietly!) Great work guys, we hope to see you in your new milestone t-shirts soon.

So that's 99 parkruns completed in what seems like the blink of an eye and this Saturday we go in to treble figures. We couldn't pass by the opportunity for a little bit of 'extra' fun though so we are inviting those of you who like a silly challenge to pull on your pyjamas and get a 'PJ-PB'! And for those who have mentioned that you don't own any nightwear, you still have time to borrow some!

Look forward to seeing you all on Saturday for the pyjama party and "don't forget your barcode" of course.

27/05/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #92 Mark shares his parkrun story

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 92
27th May 2017

This week 223 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 37 were first timers and 40 recorded new Personal Bests (woop woop!!) Representatives of 21 different clubs took part.

Wyre Forest park run 27052017.

Mark REAVES is our run report writer this week and he tells us what Wyre Forest parkrun means to him. Enjoy!

It all started about 2 years ago when a good friend of mine ran the London marathon and convinced me to start running. So I downloaded a C25K app and started to follow that.

After a few weeks I was able to run 5K fairly regularly, but running on my own found I was lacking motivation and support. Then Wyre Forest parkrun started up and I got completely hooked.

This week was my 50th at Wyre Forest but I have run 2 at Stratford where my good friend is an RD and I felt I had to run my actual 50th there because its all her fault this running lark, she has also run Wyre Forest twice and I think she enjoyed it even though Stratford is dead flat!!

Anyway this week was a hot run so decided to run with my son which I thoroughly enjoyed.

parkrun itself has given me more than just the chance to run against the clock it has also given me some great new friendships and I have joined a running club - the Forest Monsters ( you may have noticed them). I have also run 3 half marathons and three 10k races since starting to run so any new runners beware this sport is highly addictive.

I am always on the lookout for races etc. and will be running the multi verse next month at Stourport, the Wyre forest half in July and the Spitfire 10k in September all leading up to my first marathon in Birmingham in October, so parkrun is also an invaluable training aid to get some miles in!

Racing isn't for everyone so parkrun is a great way to get outside and enjoy its great each week to turn up take part but also to volunteer in such a beautiful setting as the Wyre Forest.

Thanks to all at Wyre Forest parkrun for a great event each week. Saturday has been renamed parkrun day in our household, my 2 eldest have both run & my 2 youngest now look forwards to being able to start coming along. Happy running everyone!!!

Sorry for the long ramble, - Mark.

Well done Mark - 50 parkruns for a relative 'beginner' is pretty amazing. Good luck in your upcoming races and thanks for telling us about your running journey. We'd love to hear more about you all - so please don't be shy and write to us and tell us your story, we know that other people's journeys are incredibly inspiring so don't keep them to yourselves - email us at wyreforestoffice@parkrun.com Thank you!

01/04/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #84 Gav’s Run Report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 84
1st April 2017

This week's run report has been written by regular parkrunner and volunteer Gavin MILLICHIP. Most of us will recognise Gavin as the man behind the camera when he's not running (his PB is currently 22:51) but when we started our parkrun Gav was a non-runner! He tells us his story.

Wyreforsstparkrun04022017
Photo: Gavin is usually behind the camera but here he is being captured by some pirates (aka the Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers) whilst on marshal duty recently!!

"I've been running and volunteering at the Wyre Forest parkrun for just over year and have found it to be one most enjoyable forms of keeping fit. The Wyre Forest is such a beautiful setting and mixing this with such a great group of people makes it a perfect start to the weekend.

The excellent format of running against your own time means you always push yourself to try and improve your time without there being a overly competitive feel. It`s a great event that is so reliant on the hard work of the regular faces week in week out and the ongoing commitment of you all really is appreciated.

My first introduction to the parkrun was through Bill's (marshal point no 5 regular) forest fitness workouts. Having not done any sporting activities for a long time Bill set about knocking me into shape and although initially very exhausting the benefits were soon evident. Having never run before Bill got me regularly running PBs at the parkrun and even got me to do the Wyre Forest half marathon!

I`ve enjoyed running and volunteering at the parkrun ever since (with the added benefit that I can walk the next day unlike after a Bill workout!!) Cheers Bill.

I`d just like to end my report about my parkrun experience by thanking all involved in making this very special event happen.

If you haven't volunteered for the parkrun give it a go as I`m sure you`ll really enjoy it and you will help insure the future of this great event.

Best wishes to all parkrunners and volunteers".

Thank you Gav for a brilliant report, your regular photographs and well done on your ever improving PB!

This week 181 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 36 were first timers and 39 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 15 different clubs took part.

Well done to all our newbies embarking on their parkrun journey with their first run!:

Many of those first time runners are from local club Tri Energy who chose this week's parkrun as the location for their Graduation Run after completing their recent C25k course! Around 20 members ran of whom 7 had never been here before. And 6 members got a PB!! Hopefully it will be one of many memorable Wyre Forest parkruns for them all and we congratulate them on their efforts on a tough course - well done!

10/12/2016 Wyre Forest parkrun #68 From Rio Gold medalists to tri-energy beginners and everyone in between

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 68
10th December 2016

We had a great morning at event number 68 with lots of 'extra' special people running with us this week (I say 'extra' because you are all special to us!)

However, even those of us who have more than a few miles in our running shoes will remember the nerves involved with that first ever 5k, that first parkrun or first race... And so we all understood how the Tri-energy Run Fitter graduates were feeling after they completed their beginners course and turned up this Saturday to complete their first official timed 5k.

And they all did brilliantly. Congratulations to you all, if you can complete Wyre Forest parkrun then you really can conquer anything!

Wyre Forest parkrun #68 10-12-2016

And of course we must say a HUGE thanks to our fantastic volunteers with who we wouldn't even have a parkrun:

Please contact us at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com to enquire about volunteering - we'd love to have you help us out.

Jocelyne ADAMS chose Wyre Forest parkrun as the location to complete her milestone 50th parkrun and brought with her 15 members of Bridgnorth Running Club. They celebrated in the Forest Café afterwards. Well done Jocelyne, here's to the next 50!

Now I think it's fair to say that we have amazing people at Wyre Forest parkrun every week. But I think this is the first time we've had a TeamGB Gold medallist run here! Local swimmer Claire CASHMORE picked up gold and silver medals in the Rio Paralympics 2016 to add to her medals from London, Beijing and Athens. And swimming is not her only talent if her finishing time on Saturday is anything to go by, Claire completed her first ever parkrun finishing as second female and looking incredibly strong crossing the finish line!

Wyre Forest parkrun #68 10-12-2016
Photo: Claire finishes her first parkrun in style

Well done to Claire and all our first time parkrunners:

Claire CASHMORE, Reece REYNOLDS, Ashling CASHMORE, Michael RIDDLE, Redd SAVAGE, Scarlett HOLLOWAY, Trina JONES, Jane DAVIS, Mewgan LIVESEY, Stella HOLLOWAY, Richard DAVIS, Sophie DAVIS, M HUGHES

We hope to see you back again soon beating those PBs!

Just before I go, please can you all check your bags if you brought one with you on Saturday as one of our regular runners has lost a top (of great importance to him) and we want to try to get it back. We think it may have gone in someone's bag that was left at the finish line - so please, please check and get in touch if you have it.

On a similar theme, we have had some finish tokens go missing, if you have one - don't be embarrassed just drop it back to us! We have to replace them and the new ones don't scan very well so we'd like any originals back please.

parkrun tokens

Thanks everyone, don't forget we are here every Saturday as usual over the festive season including Christmas Eve and NYE. Please bring your tinsel and sparkle on Christmas Eve, I have heard a rumour there could be some impressive fancy dress outfits on show so feel free to join in!

See you next week, Andie
