22/12/2018 Wyre Forest parkrun #171 Sandra’s Sparkly Christmas Run Report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 171
22nd December 2018

This week's Christmas parkrun report is written by the lovely Sandra HOWARD. So relax and enjoy!

The press called today ‘Super Saturday’ and what a super Saturday it was as 242 of us completed this weeks parkrun on such a beautiful morning too. As it was the last Saturday before Christmas - many entered the spirit of Wyre Forest parkrun and dressed in suitable Christmas attire. Where else would you see a Christmas present running alongside Christmas trees and a Christmas pud? Even some of the dogs came dressed up. There were Santa’s and reindeer in a sea of red and green running through the wyre forest. One lucky child had their very own sleigh ride this morning!

We celebrated some milestone runs this morning. Morgan PUPLETT and Olivia CHILDE both celebrated their tenth parkrun. Well done both.

As 242 of us ran around the forest we were cheered on by our wonderful volunteers. These are the people that make parkrun possible each week. So if you have not yet volunteered - make it a New Years resolution to give it a go. It’s easy and you are giving something back into parkrun. Two volunteers today gained their 25 volunteer badges. They were the wonderful Sandra PEDERSON cheering us on as we ran and the wonderful Debbie HYRONS who was issuing us with our finish tokens. Well done both and a huge THANK YOU TO YOU BOTH.

Some special marshal mentions this morning must go to the lovely girls at the 4K mark for singing jiggle bells so well as we passed them and to Mason the reindeer for encouraging us on before we ran up cardiac hill. A big thank you to goes to Ryan MORGAN who with a little help from his mum made some scrumptious shortbread Christmas trees for us as a post run treat. Thank you.

Thank you again to all of those who volunteered today to make this event happen . Merry Christmas to all.

Thank you Sandra for a wonderful Run Report.

This week 242 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 18 were first timers and 17 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 29 different clubs took part.

25/11/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #118 Awesome Andy volunteers for the 100th time

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 118
25th November 2017

This week 242 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 48 were first timers and 31 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 26 different clubs took part.

We welcomed tourists from Bournemouth, Yorkshire and Worcester this week. Lots of Worcester Black Pear Joggers were participating as part of their club championships - we hope the course proved a success for you all!

The event was made possible by 23 volunteers:

Nigel GARDNER • Mark WALLACE • Andrea FORD • Andrew T DAVIES • Lisa BAILEY • Mark REAVES • Adrian FORD • David STARKIE • Andrew GARLICK • Duncan STARKIE • Carole EVANS • Martin BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Andy MORGAN • Tom ANDERSON • Tina SMITH • Pete SMITH • John FRANCIS • Ian BELL • Pauline SMITH • Matt JACKSON • Debbie JACKSON • James PAYTON

We said a special 'thank you' to our awesome Andy GARLICK who this week volunteered for the 100th time! He is the first of our core team to reach this amazing milestone. There are no more official milestone clubs after 25 for volunteers (or free t-shirts!) but I still think this deserves a special mention. Without regular volunteers like Andy we really wouldn't have a parkrun - Andy was one of our founding members from Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and we are incredibly grateful to him for all the time he puts in.

AndyG
Photo: Our awesome Andy G!

And another important volunteer also reached an official milestone as Nigel GARDNER joined the Volunteer25 Club. thank you Nigel for all the time you give to help us out!

And Ruby THOMAS joined the Junior10 Club this week so will soon be sporting a special white 10 t-shirt! Well done Ruby!

Well done to this week's fantastic first timers!:

Ollie OLIVER, Tom BENTLEY, Sam BURR, Steve HINE, Edward WESTBURY, Nathan FITTER, Gary FITTER, Richard CANNON, Nina FINCH, Joseph HADLEY, Alex HADLEY, Katie PICKERSGILL, Mark PICKERSGILL, Eve HADLEY, Paul HADLEY, Alanie PARFITT

Some dates for your diary:
On December 9th the Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers (the drinking club with a running problem!) will be doing a full volunteer takeover! And they have a theme (of course!) which is 'Panto'. Oh no it isn't......Oh yes it is! Etc....! Sounds like brilliant fun so please join in!

Then on the following Saturday we will be collecting items to donate to Kidderminster Foodbank. Obviously this is a fabulous time of year for many of us but we mustn't forget that sadly, some families in the area are not so lucky.

foodbank

The sort of items that we'd appreciate are long life items - cans, jars, UHT milk, juice in cartons, tinned fruit, toiletries, washing powder etc. and it would also be nice to include some Christmas items where possible (sweets, chocolates, Christmas puddings etc.) A volunteer from the foodbank has offered to come and collect the items on that date (16th December) and to thank us - so lets make it a large collection! thanks all.

Saturday 23rd December will be our final parkrun before Christmas and a big celebration! So lets get those Santa suits, reindeer ankler headbands and tinsel garlands out and make it a sparkly spectacular! Cakes and mince pies are also very welcome!!

And of course as well as all that - Don't forget your Barcode!

Thank you all for continuing to support our wonderful parkrun and make it the amazing event that it is.

See you on Saturday!
Andie

Christmas and New Year Announcement

Hi all

Just to confirm - there will be NOT be extra runs on Christmas Day or New Years Day this year.

Our core team have young families so we could not field a safe team to run extra events on these dates I'm afraid - I'm sure you all understand!

Sending you all best wishes for the festive season ahead - see you on all the usual parkrun Saturdays throughout the Christmas and New Year period though!

Andie and the team

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 67
3rd December 2016

Thank you to our 113 runners and 18 volunteers for your support this week. As we get nearer to Christmas the numbers might drop (post party hangover anyone?) but the effort certainly does not as 26 runners left with new PBs this week! Congratulations all of you.

Wyre Forest parkrun #67A huge thanks of course to our organisers and volunteers this week:

Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Chris SIMPSON • Duncan STARKIE • Finlay BRITNELL • Jo MATHEWS • Lisa BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Martin BIGGS • Michelle DICKENSON-BENNETT • Molly MATHEWS • Neil CRABBE • Nigel GARDNER • Sam DICKENSON-BENNETT • Sam HAWKSWELL • Steven SMITH • Vicky HONEYBOURNE

Particular thanks must go to one of this week's timekeepers, Nigel Gardener who celebrated his wedding anniversary by bringing his wife along! We hope you both enjoyed the start to your special day. Who says romance is dead eh??! Not at Wyre Forest parkrun it isn't!

We had just two first timers this week - Hylton Smith and Nathan Smith from local Cleobury Mortimer Running Club. The brothers both finished their beginners running course just last week so must be massively proud of running the whole 5k in 28:57!! well done to you both.

26/12/2015 Wyre Forest parkrun #18 Fuelled by turkey and chocolate?

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 18
26th December 2015

Boxing Day was a massive success at Wyre Forest parkrun and brought 155 runners to the event - a record turnout excluding the inaugural! Lots of new faces were amongst them (64 to be precise!) trying out new shoes and running watches - long may it continue!

Not surprisingly, volunteer numbers were slightly down so I have to say an extra big thank you to those of you who interrupted the festivities to give up family time for the love of parkrun. We really appreciate it and could not have done it without you, the atmosphere was brilliant and that is down to our parkrun community. Cheers!

Boxing Day 2015 Wyre Forest parkrun

Photo: Two of our wonderful volunteers, Michael and Julie.

We need more volunteers! Please get in touch if you can help!

I was really pleased to see some Couch to 5k Course graduates joining us on Boxing Day. The NHS backed C25k course is a fantastic programme for getting total non-runners up to running for 30 minutes after just 9 weeks. As a run leader I can vouch for the fact that it really works. I was incredibly proud to see Jennet Roberts and Kaylee Gandee cross our finish line after completing their C25k course with Cleobury Mortimer Running Club at the end of  November. I'm sure you'll all agree that Wyre Forest parkrun is not the easiest 5k course you can run so to complete it so soon after starting running is pretty awesome. Shirley Thomas (one of our volunteers) also ran the course on Boxing Day - another C25k graduate. Well done ladies!

The youngsters were leading the pack again this week with Henry Newbould finishing first for the second time at Wyre Forest, he ran in 18:38 - a new PB. Local Kidderminster and Stourport AC runner Archie Roberts (also JM15-17) was second male on his first time at Wyre Forest and Rob Deakin of Birchfield Harriers third male finisher with a new PB. Rob has completed 60 parkruns so to claim a parkrun PB on our hills at Wyre Forest is pretty impressive! Well done all of you!

We often see runners from Birchfield Harriers finishing strongly at Wyre Forest and Sarah Conway was back to lead the ladies in again this week in a time of 20:32. We have a new holder of the Age Grade Category Record for SW18-19 after Harriette Drew finished second female in a time of 21:21. And visiting parkrunner and Ranelagh Harrier Clare Fowler was third female in 23:03.

Boxing Day 2015 Wyre Forest parkrun

It was nice to spend time talking to a few of our visitors on Saturday. Christmas obviously sees a lot of new runners and parkrun tourism. All were in agreement - our course is beautiful but tough! But it is great to hear that everyone thinks our volunteers do a great job - but we knew that didn't we?!

We did have a few problems processing the results this week. We had a couple of runners refusing to take finish tokens and ducking out of the funnel. I don't know why. May be over indulgence the day before lead to a disappointing finish time, who knows. Please remember that if you cross the finishing line, we will record that time and therefore you must take a token. If you wish to remain anonymous just get it scanned without your barcode. It just makes it so much easier for us as our volunteers don't always remember to remove your token for you. And some weeks we do not have enough volunteers to provide a designated funnel manager. We don't want to spend hours (particularly on Boxing Day) trying to pinpoint where runners have 'ducked the funnel' but we DO want to get everyone's result right so we need to work together on this. Thank you. And thanks for bearing with us whilst we sorted everything out.

And so this brings an end to 2015 and our first Christmas at Wyre Forest parkrun. Thank you to everyone who has supported us by running or volunteering or donating to us this year. We are looking forward to a fantastic 2016!

We will be back on January 2nd 2016. If you'd like to volunteer in the New Year and beyond please email us at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com. We really need you!

The stats are below. Happy New Year! Andie

19/12/2015 Wyre Forest parkrun #17 Merry Christmas everyone!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 17
19th December 2015

Firstly, as usual, thanks to our festive volunteers for all their help on Saturday and especially to Kim Hood for providing some rather excellent chocolate cake. Just what we needed after another drizzly morning in the forest! Extra thanks also to Ade Ford who spent the morning of his birthday processing the results for us all (thankfully there were no funnel duckers or double crossers this week - well done everyone!) This week's volunteers:

Adrian FORD • Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Anne KINGHAM • Antony MORRIS • Carole EVANS • Chris SIMPSON • Dale EVANS • Dianna CAVACIUTI • Ian CLOUGH • Jayne HILL • John KINGSTON • Judith FRY • Kim HOOD • Lisa GARLICK • Marie CAVACIUTI • Martin BIGGS • Peter NORTON

I'd like to welcome JM10 parkrunner Aran Moore to the milestone '10 club' this week. Well done Aran!

Sam Lloyd-Perks was our first finisher this week in an impressive 17:34. It is Sam's first visit to Wyre Forest parkrun following his recovery from injury. What a way to come back! Glad to have you with us Sam and hope to see you having a go at the course record when you're back to full fitness!

Hugh Davies (of Black Pear Joggers) was next through the funnel in a time of 18:47 which is now the Age Category Record for VM45-49. Brilliant running Hugh.

It was another good week for regular Tina Smith who broke her own Age Category Record again (I'm losing count of how many times that is now Tina!) So the VW50-54 record now stands at 23:07. I ran myself this week and did have a go at keeping up with Tina but despite her looking like she was taking it easy she shot off about half way and left me buckled at the side of the course! She really is an amazing athlete.

And another impressive female is Diane Mary Brian who now holds our Age Category Record for VW 60-64 after completing the course in 28:56. It was her first visit to Wyre Forest and we hope to see her back here again soon. Amazing running Diane, well done.

I'd also like to say a big thank you to members of TriKS who visited us on Saturday and had a fun morning trying to predict how long they would each take to run the course. Without their GPS watches! Brilliant idea! They looked like they were really enjoying themselves.

And so finally on behalf of everyone at Wyre Forest parkrun, I'd like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and we shall see you (please drive responsibly!) on Boxing Day at 8.50am! Don't forget that the Forest cafe is closed during our run so feel free to bring your own refreshments.

Wyre Forest parkrun will continue to operate throughout the festive period as usual. This year that includes Boxing Day on Saturday 26th December 2015 and Saturday 2nd January 2016.

Unfortunately, the Forest Cafe will not be open until 11.00am on Boxing Day. So please bring along your own refreshments that day.

Though we were given the option to add extra events on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, as yet we do not have a large enough base of core volunteers to operate additional runs. If you'd like to see this change, please join our volunteer mailing list by opting in to receive volunteer emails via your parkrun profile.

The good news is that there are local runs happening on Christmas Day. Worcester start at 9.00am and Arrow Valley at 10.00am.

For further details about all parkruns over the festive period please check out the Christmas Compendium at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/christmas-compendium/

The team at Wyre Forest parkrun would like to wish all our runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters a happy and healthy Christmas and New Year.
