30/12/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #121 Aussie Ann’s last run report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 121
30th December 2017

This week's parkrun has been written by our very own 'Wyre Forest Aussie' Ann WEBBER. Sadly for us, Ann is resident here for just one more week before she departs our shores to return back to her homeland.

For those that haven't had the pleasure of meeting Ann, she will be holding the stopwatch for the final time this weekend and we are all going to miss her so, so much. She is a woman of great strength, generosity and humour and she will leave many happy memories with us all.

Before I copy her run report here are just a few of Ann's best moments, in photographs:

Thank you Ann, and over to you for your report:

And so 2017 has come to pass. Still unable to give up your Chrissie costumes which this week looked a little tighter, congratulations on another, or your first parkrun year. For the last time this year, you squeezed around that first corner without hitting your shins on the timber railing, avoided entanglement with a dog lead, scooted down the hill and up the rise, caught your breath, wound your way along the flat, wheeled around the 3k corner, huffed and heaved up and up and up, wondered why, passed your second favourite sign (4km silly), reached the bottom of cardiac hill without remembering how, girded and gritted teeth and loins, and then to the cacophony of calls from the funnel team reached your favourite line and sign. FINISH!

And what about the highlights and future goals of some of our other lovely park runners?

Chloe, first female finisher

2017 Highlight?: winning the Birmingham half marathon.

2018 Goal?: running the London Big Half Marathon in March in under 75 minutes.

DSC_0537

Will, first male finisher.

2017 Highlight?: Making the British team and participating in the European Championships, held in Slovakia

2018 Goal?: I'd like to do it again.

DSC_0535

Shep, first dog finisher. Welsh Sheep dog, 9 years of age (or 63 dog years) has been running for one and a half years (or 1.5 x 7 = ... oh you can work it out)

Highlight?: Wyre Forest PB in Dec 17.

Goal?: Continue to beat Daisy, that brown lab, my kennel mate, coming in just behind me.

Andy G our 100 x volunteer man.

Highlight?: "Ummm... Ummmm...." (I'll give you a minute and come back - ed)

Sarah

Highlight?: Using the male toilets (female toilets broken)and having the blokes look away. So sweet!

Goal?: Just tickled to get round. No expectations. (Wot!? You're happy!? Not beating yourself up, not held captive by your inner running beast!? I'll have what she's having - ed)

Clair, who started running in July, on her 20th Parkrun dressed as Father Christmas, a (currently redundant it has to be said) promotion after last week running as an elf.

Highlight?: Running the Telford 5km without stopping.

Goal?: Booked into a half marathon. Yeah!

DSC_0577

Kerry

Highlight?: Running my 6th Parkrun after being bullied, totally unfit into it.

Goal?: Increase the run part of run/walk and get around Ludlow in under 40 minutes.

Claire, dressed as Superwoman (reverted quickly back to normal after the festive season).

Highlight?: running Worcester Pitchcroft Parkrun in 30:00:02....

Goal: knocking three hundredths of a second off to run a sub 30 minute 5km.

DSC_0575

Adam, 65 Parkruns, 15 years old

Highlight?: 8 PBs in a row! ("No!" Says some mad woman from the bleachers. "Spending quality time with parents!")

Goal?: Wyre Forest Parkrun under 22 minutes by end of 2018. Encouraging parents to find alternative Saturday morning interest.

Andy G our 100 x volunteer man.

Highlight?: "Ummm... Ummmm...." (I'll give you a minute and come back - ed)

Dale, this week's timekeeper.

Highlight?: messing the timekeeping every week and still getting given the gig.

Goal?: Zero tolerance! Not to mess up once... or twice, or only every second week...

Imogen, on her 54th Parkrun, aged 18.

Highlight?: first half marathon, Worcester City

Goal?: Beat that time at the Liverpool Half in March 18.

Carol, who turned 72 just after Christmas

Highlight:? Being able to jog again and without stopping after a 14 year hiatus

Goal?: To do again, and again, and....

Bob and Sue, regular Parkrun spectators and grandparents to Christopher, 15, Hannah, 12 and Sam, 10

Highlight?: Christopher winning the Kiddie 5km Santa run and taking the track record. Watching all three run as well as they can.

Goal?: getting Sam to 11 in November when he will be able to run on his own.

Rob R

Highlight?: Running with all the people from Hillhampton and Holt Heath

Goal?: To run a World Championship and... oh, break the course record at parkrun. "Your chances?", ed. "Very good to excellent."

DSC_0569

Veronica, aged 72, running for one year, completed her 6th Parkrun

Highlight?: Always coming first in my age group. Blood pressure stabilised without pills.

Goal?: keep running and be sufficiently improved to enter a half marathon before I'm 80.

Andy G our 100 x volunteer man, last chance

Highlight?: "Ummm... Ummmm.... ummmmm....It was a blur." A wonderfully eloquent summary. Now the second part of this interview and remember I'd like to get home before dark.

Goal?: Running injury free to justify more beer and curry. (No hesitation, answered right off the bat.)

See you next year. Thanks for the memories!

Aw Ann......thank you for another wonderful run report and for everything you have contributed to Wyre Forest parkrun. It really won't be the same without you :-( We all wish you the very best on your travels before you return home to NSW and start your own parkrun (no pressure!)

25/11/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #118 Awesome Andy volunteers for the 100th time

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 118
25th November 2017

This week 242 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 48 were first timers and 31 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 26 different clubs took part.

We welcomed tourists from Bournemouth, Yorkshire and Worcester this week. Lots of Worcester Black Pear Joggers were participating as part of their club championships - we hope the course proved a success for you all!

The event was made possible by 23 volunteers:

Nigel GARDNER • Mark WALLACE • Andrea FORD • Andrew T DAVIES • Lisa BAILEY • Mark REAVES • Adrian FORD • David STARKIE • Andrew GARLICK • Duncan STARKIE • Carole EVANS • Martin BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Andy MORGAN • Tom ANDERSON • Tina SMITH • Pete SMITH • John FRANCIS • Ian BELL • Pauline SMITH • Matt JACKSON • Debbie JACKSON • James PAYTON

We said a special 'thank you' to our awesome Andy GARLICK who this week volunteered for the 100th time! He is the first of our core team to reach this amazing milestone. There are no more official milestone clubs after 25 for volunteers (or free t-shirts!) but I still think this deserves a special mention. Without regular volunteers like Andy we really wouldn't have a parkrun - Andy was one of our founding members from Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and we are incredibly grateful to him for all the time he puts in.

AndyG
Photo: Our awesome Andy G!

And another important volunteer also reached an official milestone as Nigel GARDNER joined the Volunteer25 Club. thank you Nigel for all the time you give to help us out!

And Ruby THOMAS joined the Junior10 Club this week so will soon be sporting a special white 10 t-shirt! Well done Ruby!

Well done to this week's fantastic first timers!:

Ollie OLIVER, Tom BENTLEY, Sam BURR, Steve HINE, Edward WESTBURY, Nathan FITTER, Gary FITTER, Richard CANNON, Nina FINCH, Joseph HADLEY, Alex HADLEY, Katie PICKERSGILL, Mark PICKERSGILL, Eve HADLEY, Paul HADLEY, Alanie PARFITT

Some dates for your diary:
On December 9th the Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers (the drinking club with a running problem!) will be doing a full volunteer takeover! And they have a theme (of course!) which is 'Panto'. Oh no it isn't......Oh yes it is! Etc....! Sounds like brilliant fun so please join in!

Then on the following Saturday we will be collecting items to donate to Kidderminster Foodbank. Obviously this is a fabulous time of year for many of us but we mustn't forget that sadly, some families in the area are not so lucky.

foodbank

The sort of items that we'd appreciate are long life items - cans, jars, UHT milk, juice in cartons, tinned fruit, toiletries, washing powder etc. and it would also be nice to include some Christmas items where possible (sweets, chocolates, Christmas puddings etc.) A volunteer from the foodbank has offered to come and collect the items on that date (16th December) and to thank us - so lets make it a large collection! thanks all.

Saturday 23rd December will be our final parkrun before Christmas and a big celebration! So lets get those Santa suits, reindeer ankler headbands and tinsel garlands out and make it a sparkly spectacular! Cakes and mince pies are also very welcome!!

And of course as well as all that - Don't forget your Barcode!

Thank you all for continuing to support our wonderful parkrun and make it the amazing event that it is.

See you on Saturday!
Andie

Finally, thank you so much to everyone who donated to our appeal for funds. As RD Andy said on Saturday: parkrun is, and always will be, free to run but the kit and equipment we need for the run is not. We have to buy it from our own donations pot. Much as we hate to ask for money, we cant replace essential kit without donations. So I am incredibly grateful to everyone who donated this weekend - I can't find enough ways to express our gratitude but once again - THANK YOU!!

See you all next week
Andie

Congratulations to all the first time parkrunners:

Tamar WILKINS, Sonny WALKLEY, Laura BRIDGEWATER, Jony SILVEIRA, Alexander BROWN, Matty WESTWOOD, Richard WESTWOOD, Laura CAPP, Paul SHEPHERD, Craig ROBINSON, Bev KERNOHAN, Holly ASHLEY, Holly PEARSALL, Joan BROOKES

We had a few special people with us this week. Firstly congratulations to Joan CLARKE who was running her 101st parkrun. Super quick Joan (our current VW60-64 age category record holder) clocked up her 100th parkrun last week at Perry Hall parkrun but wanted to celebrate with us too (and who can blame her)! Well you can't have to many celebratory parkruns can you?! Well done Joan!

Sasha GUEST ran her 10th parkrun today and so joins the milestone 10 club for junior runners - superb job Sasha!

And we had two runners who completed their 50th parkruns. One we knew about and one that we didn't until I looked at the results afterwards! So well done to Michelle SCURRELL and the rather shy Carl PRICE on your achievements with us! Michelle has run all of her 50 parkruns at Wyre Forest which is lovely and she has volunteered on several occasions too. Carl is also one of our volunteers and has run 45 of his 50 parkruns at Wyre Forest. Great dedication by them both I'm sure you will all agree.

Well done as always to all our runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters and see you all next week for event #99!

14/01/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #73 Cleobury Mortimer Running Club take over and show you how volunteering works

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 73
14th January 2017

This Saturday we had our first ever 'volunteer takeover'. As you know, most of the core team are with Cleobury Mortimer Running Club so we thought it time to get a few of those club members who'd not volunteered before to see what it was like and get involved too.

Joined on the day by a couple of non-members (including Mark Wallace who took most of the fabulous photographs of the event - great job thanks Mark), we broke our previous record for volunteer numbers (which was at an inaugural event back in August 2015!)

As both RD on Saturday and a coach at CMRC I'd like to personally say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped us out this week:

Adrian FORD • Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Ann WEBBER • Cerys ROWLES • Debbie PRICE • Donna PERRY • Finlay BRITNELL • Jayne SWIFT • Jennet ROBERTS • Joanne WATSON • Kim HOOD • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Lisa BAILEY • Lisa BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Lisa HALLIDAY • Mark WALLACE • Martin BIGGS • Michelle BRIGGS • Rose WATSON • Sallie SHAW • Sara HARRIS • Sarah TAYLOR • Sian POWELL • Vicky HONEYBOURNE

Photo: The CMRC volunteer team

Cleobury Mortimer Running Club was established in September 2015, just after Wyre Forest parkrun and the two have a lot in common. As I said, most of our core team are from CMRC and I think its safe to say that without the commitment, enthusiasm and vision of my friends at the club we would not have got Wyre Forest parkrun off the ground when we did. Wyre Forest District Council had got the funding and a location in place for a year before we were approached about running it.

Myself and a few Cleobury runners had heard volunteers were needed so we contacted our ambassador Richard Ralphs and got our names on the list. Dale (Wyre Forest DC Sports Development Officer who approached us) said he was nearly at the point of giving up on it when we stepped in. As soon as I knew an Event Director was needed so that we could get started I volunteered immediately knowing that I had plenty of support alongside me.

At that time we were just a group of social runners but we knew that once a local parkrun was established, participation at all our local running clubs would increase so we needed to become more structured and so CMRC was born. At that time there were very few of us and so it made sense for us to approach another club about helping us out, and so we became a 'satellite club' to Ludlow Runners. This means our members are also members of Ludlow Runners and vice-versa and we are part of a UKA registered club.

Since then myself and Jo have trained as UKA coaches and along with other qualified leaders (and more to follow) we have grown the club to over 40 paid up members! We have staged 4 learn-to-run courses and start our 5th this week. Since that first course we have taken non-runners to 10k, half-marathon, marathon and even ultra distance! So we are quite pleased with our little (but getting bigger!) club.

But one of our proudest achievements is Wyre Forest parkrun. I think when we look back we didn't imagine how important and special it would become to us. We've met so many amazing and inspirational people, made friendships that will last a lifetime, changed our (and other peoples) perceptions about running (and runners!), exchanged lie-ins for standing in the rain cheering...the list goes on. Speaking just for myself, getting involved with Wyre Forest parkrun and CMRC was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Anyway, enough of the sentimentality! If you'd like to know more about CMRC you can contact us at run@runcleobury.org or visit Cleobury Mortimer Running Club

We currently offer coached/lead sessions for all abilities on Tuesdays at 7pm, meeting at 6.50pm at Teme Leisure (Cleobury Mortimer) Sports Hall. We are fully inclusive and no one is ever left behind. We also enjoy the social side of running and organise regular social evenings as well as entering the odd (!) race together.

Some of the great people we've met at parkrun are the awesome Forest Monsters! They can't be missed in their orange kit and this week was a celebration run for two special ladies. Tina SMITH completed her milestone 50th parkrun so can now claim her free RED t-shirt! And Helena ASHWIN joined in the fun as she celebrated her birthday. Looking great ladies!! Hope you both had a fab morning.

The following all joined us for the first time - well done you are all parkrunners now!

Matt BALDOCK, Josh BOND, Shaun WILTSHERE, Charlie KENNAN, Wayne, KENNAN, Ben KENNAN, Craig DOLAN, Georgia MACE, Aaron MASON, Xena GOULD, Elizabeth GOULD, Mark THOMAS, Andy JUDD, Olivia MORTON, Kirsty TRACEY, Alexandra LINNEY, Keith GUEST, Maria MIHAJLOVIC.

I also wanted to give a special mention to Paul ROBERTS. Paul went to try some parkrun tourism this week but sadly Hanbury Hall was cancelled. He arrived there, realised and drove back to Wyre Forest. Arrived here at 9.30am and still ran the 5k just making it back before our tailrunner!! What a hero! Well done Paul.

Mark took some brilliant photos this week, showing how parkrun works from the volunteer perspective. So heres a selection:

Simple!

So thank you once again to Mark for the photos and CMRC for providing the volunteers for another fab parkrun.

We look forward to future takeovers - details on the calendar at the bottom but thank you to Tri-Energy, Bridgnorth Running Club and Wyre Forest Hash House Harriers who have all got dates in the diary for February and March to take over the roster and Amazing Feet who are also looking at dates! Exciting stuff. We are lucky to have so many great clubs in our area.

Thanks for reading, it was quite a long one - see you next time

07/01/2017 Wyre Forest parkrun #72 New Year, new starts… (and finish!)

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 72
7th January 2017

Happy New Year to all parkrunners, volunteers supporters and families! We kicked off 2017 with a slight change to our course. Following a request from our landowners the Forestry Commission, we moved our start line and finish area slightly further up the hill from last year.

#wyreforestparkrun070117

177 of you came to challenge yourselves including 35 first timers. Lets say a big CONGRATULATIONS to the following runners who completed their first ever parkrun this Saturday at Wyre Forest:

Andrew PAWSON, Mark BIRKS, Dean HUTTON, Grant Wills, Tina ROWBERY, Jackie LITTLE, Denise WILTON, Grant HOWARD, Xylia READING, Charlie EDMONDS, Martin HUTTON, Marie HARRIS, Emily HOOPER, Terry BLUNN, Andrea HINTON, Sasha GUEST, Aneka GUEST, Amelia-Jayne THOMAS, Beth NEWTON, Catherine BLUNT, Charlotte MONDON-LINES, Millie MORTON, Matthew MORTON, Skye WEAVER, Andrew WEAVER, Isabella HERMAN, Jo HERMAN

P1010418

A particular big WELL DONE to the 21 runners who gained a PB this week. I think its fair to say that a 2017 PB is even harder earned than a 2016 one to give yourselves a huge pat on the back.

The other bunch of amazing people are our volunteers:

Adrian FORD • Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Dave SMITH • Gavin MILLICHIP • Jo MATHEWS • Joanne WATSON • Kim HOOD • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Lisa BAILEY • Lisa GARLICK • Martin BIGGS • Megan SCURRELL • Michelle SCURRELL • Molly MATHEWS • Neil CRABBE • Paul SCURRELL • Philip SHELDON • Samantha ANDERSON • Sara HARRIS • Stuart BOOKER • Wendy BOOKER

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers! Next week we have our first ever 'Running Club parkrun Takeover' where all our volunteers will be provided by one club. First up is Cleobury Mortimer Running Club who have filled in our roster with lots of their runners coming to parkrun for the first time to volunteer.

P1010419

We would like to invite ALL our local clubs to take up our 'takeover' challenge and fill the entire roster for one week to promote your club! Please get in touch at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com. That is also the email address for anyone else who wishes to help us out. We need people from January 21st onwards - thank you!

Speaking of volunteers this week regular runner Neil CRABBE also completed his milestone 25th occasion as a volunteer to earn his free purple t-shirt! Thank you and well done Neil and welcome to the 25 club!

Wyre Forest parkrun Christmas Eve 2016 Photo: Neil is a regular here at Wyre Forest

Another regular at Wyre Forest is Steven SMITH who this week finished first for the first time! Steven also heads up our mens points table (which will come to an end in February). Will anyone catch him now?!

#wyreforestparkrun070117

Just a reminder - you can avoid queuing up the parking machines by buying a Discovery Pass from the Forest Café. It's £30 a year and you can add two car registrations to it (only one can be used at a time). Why not split the cost and the driving between you and a fellow parkrunner? Any problems with the parking machines should be reported to the Forestry Commission but if you don't have a pass we advise that you arrive early to avoid queuing!

See you all next week
Happy running
Andie :)

3rd December 2016

Thank you to our 113 runners and 18 volunteers for your support this week. As we get nearer to Christmas the numbers might drop (post party hangover anyone?) but the effort certainly does not as 26 runners left with new PBs this week! Congratulations all of you.

Wyre Forest parkrun #67A huge thanks of course to our organisers and volunteers this week:

Particular thanks must go to one of this week's timekeepers, Nigel Gardener who celebrated his wedding anniversary by bringing his wife along! We hope you both enjoyed the start to your special day. Who says romance is dead eh??! Not at Wyre Forest parkrun it isn't!

We had just two first timers this week - Hylton Smith and Nathan Smith from local Cleobury Mortimer Running Club. The brothers both finished their beginners running course just last week so must be massively proud of running the whole 5k in 28:57!! well done to you both.
