13/08/2016 Wyre Forest parkrun #51 Meet our new Run Director Andy

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 51
13th August 2016

We had a new Run Director holding the reigns this week. You will all recognise Andy Garlick as one of our core volunteers but we finally persuaded him to step up and don the blue RD vest on Saturday.

Andy has volunteered at Wyre Forest on a staggering 42 occasions. But perhaps even more surprising though is that Andy has never actually completed a parkrun himself (unless you count volunteering as tail runner!) But don't think that Andy is not an athlete - he is a member of Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and he recently completed the incredibly tough 100km ultra Race to the Stones with his wife Lisa. And in December the couple will be at the Tucson Marathon in the Arizona desert! We are really proud of both Andy and Lisa and very glad we've finally got Mr. Garlick on our RD roster!

A round of applause for all our superb volunteers this week, they are:

Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Andrew HIPKISS • Annette MORE • Anthony NEWBOULD • Caleb HIPKISS • Carole EVANS • David CHAPMAN • David MORE • Florence JONES • Helen HIPKISS • Kim HOOD • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Lisa GARLICK • Martin BIGGS • Maya HIPKISS • Sam HAWKSWELL • Sandra PEDERSEN • Wendy BOOKER

Extra thanks to Flo Jones for taking plenty of photographs for us - they are on our facebook page for those interested.

And we had some wonderful feedback regarding our marshals at 'final turn' this week. Andrew, Caleb and Maya Hipkiss will be a hard act to follow after they treated runners not only to clapping and cheering but star jumps and dancing!

Mark Homer had a fabulous run this week, a new PB of 19:44 also gained him the Age Category Record for VM55-59. Well done Mark.

Don't forget that we have just one more run remaining of our first year - where has the time gone?? And then we will celebrate our first birthday on August 27th. Fancy dress encouraged (but purely optional!) and there will be plenty of cakes and some awards and small prizes. If you'd like to donate a small prize we'd be very grateful - please pop along this Saturday and hand it to one of the core team. Thank you.

Alternatively, if you'd like to make a donation to the upkeep of Wyre Forest parkrun then please visit our 'about us' page on our website Wyre Forest parkrun - about us
Donations got to help pay for stopwatch batteries, signage and equipment etc. We've only had one donation so far so any others would be much appreciated, thank you.

Well that's about it for this week, see you next time - Andie :)

23/07/2016 Wyre Forest parkrun #48 Kim’s story

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 48
23rd July 2016

This weeks run report has been written by our Wyre Forest parkrun regular, Kim Hood. Kim has achieved an incredible amount in a short space of time and we are all very proud of her. And I can confirm that she is indeed most definitely a runner - I have seen her run laps of the car park just to round her miles up - definitive proof! She also writes a very funny blog about her running adventures which is well worth a read - https://theoldbatattheback.wordpress.com/about/ She is an inspiration to us all.

A Volunteers Story

My name is Kim, and I am a runner. If that sounds like something from an …. Anonymous group it probably should. In the fairly short time I have been running I have discovered how addictive it is, and how dedicated runners are.

I started my running attempts at Worcester parkrun after a few weeks of a Couch to 5k plan. I didn’t go to Worcester very often – and I didn’t finish the plan – but I happened to be there the week Richard announced that they were looking for volunteers for a possible run in Wyre Forest. As this is much closer to where I live I thought I would be much more likely to turn up. But first it needed to get enough volunteers.

I arrived the first week (which is almost a year ago now) knowing no-one, and more than a little anxious. I’m quite certain now that all new volunteers feel this way and I can assure anyone who is thinking of coming along as a volunteer that they will get a very warm welcome , 100 points to their total, and a t-shirt after 25 occasions. You don’t think you will get that? Neither did I. I got way more than that.

Shortly after Wyre Forest parkrun was established, the members of the Cleobury Mortimer Running Club invited me to join a new Couch to 5k course they were running. I not only finished the course with them and managed to run a whole 5k for the first time, but I ran Worcester on Christmas Day (go back to …. Anon.) with my daughter.

Since that first day I have gained a whole new circle of friends, become a guinea pig to Andie who is training as a running coach, I have run three 10k events, and have been encouraged by the CMRC friends I now have to sign up for a half marathon. I love running now (not always when I am doing it – but I understand now that not many people do), but I think I probably like volunteering even more.

Despite getting bitten to bits by forest bugs at this time of year, Saturday morning is the opportunity to catch up with what people have done, find out what madness is planned, cheer familiar faces past a marshal point or through the finish, and cheer unfamiliar faces past a marshal point or through the finish.

I think all of the volunteers are runners, and if there is a bigger circle of volunteers it means that we can all run Wyre Forest parkrun on occasion. None of the jobs are terrifying. No-one dies if you make a mistake (volunteer and be told a wealth of stories of when we……), and no-one thinks less of you if you do – but you are unlikely to make a mistake because you will be shown what is expected of you. Yes you will miss a run – but look at what you could gain.

Well done also to another of our core team, Vicky Honeybourne, who completed her 25th time as a parkrun volunteer today! This now means Vicky will get to have one of the lovely purple parkrun t-shirts, as modelled by Kim above. Vicky loves all things purple, so hopefully she'll be wearing it soon. vicky pr
Well done Vicky

Remember we can never have too many volunteers - please get in touch via email or facebook, or cick on the 'opt-in to volunteer' button on your parkrun profile.

11/06/2016 Wyre Forest parkrun #42 Farewell Forest Monster Lisa

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 42
11th June 2016

Wyre Forest parkrun 42. 11/06/2016

Our Run Director Dale oversaw events this week and with lots of local races taking place on Sunday, it was a top turnout of volunteers. Thanks one and all:

Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Chris SIMPSON • Dale EVANS • David STARKIE • Donna PERRY • Duncan STARKIE • Frankie CAVACIUTI • Gavin MILLICHIP • Hazel FAIN • Ian CLOUGH • Joanne WATSON • Kim HOOD • Lisa GARLICK • Louise WEBER • Martin BIGGS • Philip SHELDON • Rob TURNER • Vicki HULME

We like to plan ahead with our roster so if you have a free Saturday and haven't tried volunteering yet - please get in touch at wyreforesthelpers@parkrun.com

Our hardworking core team from Cleobury Mortimer Running Club are here nearly every week but we do like to have a go at taking part ourselves now and again so please shout up if you can help out or indeed if your club would like to 'takeover' the running of the event for one week - an ideal opportunity to promote your club or any races you may like to publicise.

Wyre Forest parkrun 42. 11/06/2016

Among the 152 runners, we had a strong presence from another well recognised local club this week - the fabulous Forest Monsters. You can usually hear the arrival of the 'Monsters' as the dogs start yapping excitedly just before 9am!

This week was a special run for them as Lisa Luttig was running her last ever UK parkrun before leaving these shores. She says she could not have chosen a better one for such an occasion and we agree! Farewell and Good Luck Lisa.

Thanks Helena Ashwin for sharing the above photograph to our facebook page

We had one Age Category Record broken this week and it was an impressive performance as Derek Jackson ran a speedy 20:20 to break the VM65-69 course record.

Wyre Forest Parkrun 2016/6/11

Well done to the 34 of you who now have a new course PB and to all 152 of you who came and finished the course today despite the weather forecast.

Just one piece of public information to end my report on, and that is to remind you all about parking at Wyre Forest. The Wyre Forest Discovery Pass has now been reduced to £30 a year. The pass not only supports the work that the Forestry Commission do but covers parking for two different cars. So if you are a regular runner it is well worth purchasing and saves queuing for parking machines, needing to remember change etc. It also has other benefits attached to it - further details at the bottom of this page.

We also request that you do NOT park along Lye Head Road. Local residents have had cars blocking their access as well as causing accidents by turning in drives. Please be courteous to local residents and use the forestry car park. We encourage car sharing where possible. Thank you.

Date for your Diary: Our first birthday parkrun will be on Saturday 27th August at 9am!

Watch this space for further details but there WILL be cake!

Thanks for your support everyone, see you next time! Andie

26/03/2016 Wyre Forest parkrun #31 Colin’s 100th!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 31
26th March 2016

This week's Easter weekend run was all about Colin Stanford. Colin is a member of Pershore Plum Plodders and started off as a regular at Worcester parkrun. However, at the end of February he ventured over here to try out our run and ended up liking it so much that he has stayed! And so this week we cheered him on as he completed his 100th parkrun - am amazing milestone. Colin says he's always been after 'completion and enjoyment' in running so he fits the parkrun ethos entirely. He also grabbed himself a PB this week and by massive coincidence also finished in position 100! We couldn't have planned that better if we'd tried. Well done Colin, we're all very proud of you.

We also see that Stephen Bloomer of Stourbridge RC completed his 50th parkrun this week and celebrated with a new PB. Well done Stephen! Don't be shy - if you're running a milestone run - tell us!! Stephen we hope that you'll come and see us next week so that we can congratulate you personally. We are incredibly proud of all our milestone runners. When you get your new t-shirts let us know, we'd love some photos of you.

Run Director Jo was in charge of the volunteers this week, big thanks to all of you:

Adrian FORD • Andrea FORD • Andrew GARLICK • Annette MORE • Anthony NEWBOULD • Callum BARLOW • Carole EVANS • Cathy DITTRICH • Cerys ROWLES • India-Rose FORD • Joanne WATSON • Kim HOOD • Lilia Grace FORD • Lisa BIGGS • Lisa GARLICK • Martin BIGGS • Oliver BAKER • Olivia GAVIN • Samantha ANDERSON • Sian POWELL • Stuart BOOKER • Zack MCGARRY

Please don't forget that without volunteers, there is no parkrun. If you haven't yet stepped up please get in touch and come and see things from the other side. It's fab fun and a great way for us to get to know you (and earn yourself a personalised cheer in future weeks!) We are well in to Spring race season now so if you're racing on a Sunday why not come and volunteer on a Saturday?

We need to thank two extra special people for their dedication - Lisa Garlick and Kim Hood were both timekeeping this week and completed their 25th parkrun as volunteers. They are both members of Cleobury Mortimer Running Club and we are very lucky to have them on board. Thanks ladies!

There were a huge amount of PBs again this week and the first three male finishers all earnt one.
