07/03/2020 Wyre Forest parkrun #233 celebrates International Womens Day

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 233
7th March 2020

Thank you Pauline SMITH for this week's run report :-)

Today’s parkrun was in celebration of ‘International Women’s Day’ and a new selfie board reflecting this was sent from parkrun HQ. I hoped that many of you took the opportunity to use this board for your own selfies. Perhaps you could send some and we can post them on the website.

Our Event Director Andie celebrates IWD

It was lovely to be able to come to the forest in drier weather conditions than in recent weeks, however the course was still quite slippy in places but there was definite signs that spring is definitely on its way, with wild garlic starting to grow and the birds very chirpy. On the downside, we must apologise for the lack or toilet facilities at the start of the event, but luckily the problem was soon resolved. I hope this did not cause you too much in’convenience’. (groan groan groan).

Our Run Director today was Neil CRABBE who made sure that volunteers were where they should be and also ensuring that they wore to new pink Hi-Viz jackets. There were mixed opinions on these, with some preferring the yellow.

280 runners came to the forest to take part in this week’s run. The running conditions were very much improved on recent weeks and first past the post Stuart HAWKES did it in a rather speedy 19.26 minutes, well done. There were also 35 runners who achieved a new personal best at Wyre Forest parkrun. Well done all of you excellent running.

We also had 39 runners who were running at Wyre Forest for their first time. We really hope that you enjoyed your time in the forest, and look forward to welcoming you all back in the near future when the conditions will hopefully be much better that today.

What about all these milestones!! Well done to:

Lily HALLIDAY (10), Hidi JONES, Mark PARISH, Morgan PUPLETT, Helen PUPLETT, Heidrun HAEGE, Suzanne FIELD, Jules MONTAGUE (all 50) and Angela TWINE (100!)

Absolutely brilliant, all of you.

00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200307093731154_COVER

Super Morgan and Helen after their 50th parkruns!

We also had an 'unofficial' milestone as one of our RDs Graeme celebrated his 150th parkrun in traditional Wyre Forest Hashers style - with fancy dress. You all looked fabulous!

Before I go, can I just remind everyone not to take our finish tokens home! We have lost so many now that the replacements are not scanning properly and we will need to purchase a new set soon, at cost to us. If you see anyone pocketing a token please remind them that it needs to be returned thank you.

See you all next time!

19/10/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #214 A view from tourist Sarah Ashby

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 214
19th October 2019

Thank you to Sarah ASHBY who visited us on Saturday for writing this week's fabulous run report!

Saturday is parkrun day and this week was no exception! Travelling from Bristol to the West Midlands for a day at the Safari park with children and friends, it was Wyre Forest’s turn this week. My husband isn’t a fan of getting up too early, but recently getting into parkrun and if I bribe him with breakfast and coffee after, he doesn’t usually take much persuading. So off we set for an early start, with our excited three year old in tow... she spends most Fridays asking “when can we parkrun mummy?” ! She didn’t join us in the buggy as usual this time but played in the mud with friends whilst we ran – which she was equally as happy with!

Wyre Forest event number 214 was great fun. The parkrun weather fairies were kind to us, despite it being slightly squidgy under foot and the forest was truly beautiful with its autumnal vibe. What struck me from the moment we arrived is how happy people were to be there and it was cheerful faces all around from the core team as we were greeted warmly by the Run Director. Huge thanks to the 21 volunteers named below who gave up their time to make today’s run possible, it really is appreciated by all us parkrunners.

Kim HOOD • Mark REAVES • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Lisa GARLICK • Aran MOORE • Emma MORGAN • Jo MATHEWS • Rachael SHEPHERD • David ALLISTON • Ruth ALLISTON • Stuart BIRD • Sarah ASHBY • Pauline SMITH • Paul NEWRICK • Katherine EVANS • Steve REDDING • Debbie REDDING • Jules MONTAGUE • Deana KIMBER • Henry NEWALL

It was time for the all important run brief and welcoming tourists from as far as Australia, impressive! A few announcements, then it was 3,2,1... GO! I’d been warned the previous week by a fellow parkrunner at my home parkrun “I hope you like hills...”, but I must admit that I hadn’t quite appreciated just how hilly it would be – especially that cheeky uphill finish which just seemed to go on and on! At almost 32 weeks pregnant, it was rather different to my usual flat home parkrun – but needless to say, I still absolutely loved it! There’s something just so lovely about running through the beautiful colours of the forest and squishy trails underfoot, so despite the ups this really is a lovely parkrun and I’m chuffed I managed to run the whole lot.

Today saw 237 of us runners, joggers and walkers taking on this great course. 40 of these celebrated with a lovely little PB, and 32 people in total did this gem of a parkrun for the first time. 8 of these were completely new to parkrun - welcome to the first parkrun of the rest of your life! We hope you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us do. A huge well done also goes to Christopher Hancox and Melanie Parker who completed their 50th milestone run today, and Carole Hender and Ian Bell who completed their 100th – congratulations!

Saturday mornings always make me smile. What resonates with me every single week is that parkrun is many things to many people. And Wyre Forest you were no exception. There were walkers, buggies, dogs, children, running clubs represented, cheery marshals cheering us on, you name it. There’s something so therapeutic about a forest parkrun, we really enjoyed the course. Thank you for putting on such a fab event and another Saturday morning well spent. We’ll be sure to visit again when we’re in the area!

22/06/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #197 Fireman Andy’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 197
22nd June 2019

This week's run report is brought to us by a real local hero in hi-viz. Firefighter Andy WEBSTER. Thanks Andy - for your report and for all that the emergency services do to keep us safe.

"Finally, I’m going to get my hands on a coveted black t-shirt! Run #100 – all of them completed here at my local parkrun, starting with event number 1 back in 2015 – done this week on a beautiful sunny morning, after having to put it off due to several busy weekends. I had tried to come up with ways to complete this milestone event but didn’t fancy the go-to dresses/ tutus favoured by some – I really didn’t want to have to subject that on any fellow runners! So, I decided on marking the hundredth in the following ways…

1. As a serving retained firefighter at Bewdley over a number of years, I chose the full kit option to raise awareness of our local emergency services. NB: the PPE is designed to keep heat out – however, it also does a superb job of keeping us very warm on the inside!

image2

2. It seemed like a good idea to bring our dog, Dudley, the cocker spaniel and my two sons – Leo, 6 and Jamie, 4 – along too! The family usually wait on the final hill to race me to the finish line, but this time we joined up with the excellent and very friendly/ patient tail walkers in taking in the full course in a leisurely manner; an ice-cream at the café was a well-earned reward for completing their first 5k! The boys are both now very much looking forward to being able to run the distance with the dog when they are a little bit older.

image4

3. I also responded to a social media request to volunteer for the first time, choosing this option of writing the report to be able to also run this time – helping out by volunteering for different roles is certainly something I will get involved with going forward as I am most grateful for all those who make parkrun at Wyre Forest possible.

And so my next goal is the 25 volunteer t-shirt and ultimately one day the dark green one with 250 on the back! I will be around and about doing my bit (most likely with the family in tow!) to help out where I can. I also plan to ‘go on tour’ to sample other parkruns – especially as I hear some are flatter/ faster to improve my PB!??"

image3

Thanks and well done Andy! That must have been a very, very tough run!

Congratulations and thank you also to Matt KIMBER who volunteered for the 25th time this week. We wouldn't be here with out our regular volunteers so we really do appreciate people like Matt.

This week 256 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 33 were first timers and 40 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 24 different clubs took part.

The event was made possible by 29 volunteers:

CONGRATULATIONS to Maureen LEWIS who has a new Age Category Record for VW75-79. She ran a speedy 34:36 to claim her spot on the wall of pride.

And welcome to parkrun to our first timers:

18/05/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #192 Wendy’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun

Event number 192

18th May 2019

This week's run report is written by visitor Wendy SEARS (Isabel Trail parkrun). 60346157_10216651378371633_5989414718421336064_n

My first ever Wyre Forest parkrun
I'm not the greatest of parkrun tourists. I confess that I quite like to stay close to home and (with a few exceptions) tend to only visit other parkruns when I am on holiday in the area or running a race near to that parkrun. And so it was today.
Having arranged to run the 'Down to the Wyre 10k', it would have been positively rude not to also complete the parkrun taking place before it.I drove the 46 miles from Stafford, arriving at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre with sufficient time to grab a cup of coffee, locate the onsite loos, and have a bit of banter with some of the volunteers who had arrived early to set up.
Parking was easy, with plenty of available space.. certainly at the time that I arrived. One of the stand out aspects of parkrun is the friendliness of the volunteers. I introduced myself to everyone I could find bedecked in the recognisable yellow, blue or orange parkrun volunteer tabards and was met with smiles and friendly conversation and a few useful tips about the course.

The first time briefing was given with a lot of humour, with more than one reference to the word undulating and with confirmation that we would be in no doubt about the definition of that word undulating after we had gone through the finish funnel. This comment was met with a lot of laughter. After a detailed Run Director's briefing, we had a countdown to the start of the parkrun.

The course itself is a mixture of tracks and trail paths and I have to say that I absolutely loved the first ten minutes, with some lovely downhill sections that allowed all runners, joggers and walkers to allow gravity to propel them forward, with giant trees shrouding the route. As someone who is more used to the relatively flat route of the Isabel Trail parkrun, I found myself slowing on some of the inclines. However I was given fantastic encouragement by marshals and other participants alike!

The run to the funnel up what is colloquially referred to as 'Cardiac Hill' was interesting. I use the word 'run' very loosely - Haha. It was a challenging end to a great parkrun.

I really enjoyed this parkrun. The course, the volunteers, and the participants all added elements that made the morning so memorable. I managed to take photos of most (if not all) of the volunteers who were so supportive and without whom this parkrun could not have taken place. Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. Expect to see me next year. Keep the coffee warm!

Will do Wendy and hopefully we will see you again soon!

02/03/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #181 Sandra’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 181
2nd March 2019

What a fabulous morning for this weeks parkrun. Although we did not have the sun from the beginning of the week, storm Freya stayed away today to allow us to enjoy our beautiful Wyre forest parkrun. Spring is in the air and for those who looked carefully there were two rabbits joining our run this morning.

Welcome and well done to all who were first timers today or chose to visit Wyre Forest parkrun for the first time today. Hope to see you all again soon:

Archie JONES, Ricky WEBB, Andy JOHNSON, Richard FALLOWS, Liz WALKER, Rosie ELLIOTT, Joanne JONES

Some milestones t shirts were achieved today. Callum CHILDE achieved his 10 parkrun t shirt, Emma TIPTON and Sarah PERSICH both achieved 50 parkruns today and Deborah LOWE achieved her 100th parkrun. Well done to you all. When you get your new t shirts - wear them with pride.

Whether today was your first parkrun or your 325th, well done and thank you starting the weekend with Wyre Forest parkrun.

parkrun is such a brilliant event - free, gets you out and you can bring your family (human or dog) with you to enjoy. Whether you are first over the finish or the tail walker - everyone is welcome and all are encouraged along the way. What other event can tick all these boxes?

spring parkrun 2019

A big thank you as always goes to each and every parkrun volunteer.

parkrun can only be free and take place each week with the help and support of our hero’s, who undertake various roles to allow those of us who run, to do so safely and allow the event to take place, therefore give volunteering a go. It’s a supportive community and there are many roles which need filling each week. Some roles mean you can still run and also be a hero. Contact the team and give it a go.

Email: wyreforest@parkrun.com

Enjoy your week and look forward to seeing you all next Saturday to do it all again.
