06/07/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #199 and we have a PB Bell!!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 199
6th July 2019

It was a deceptively warm morning this week as  215 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 26 were first timers and 36 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 18 different clubs took part.

Well done to these fabulous first time parkrunners:

Adrian JONES, Rio BILL, Luke WORTHINGTON, Joshua GLAZE, Richard DUDLEY, Andrew GLAZE, Annette ROBINSON, Jodi LEEK, Richard BROOMFIELD, Jessica DAVIS, Chloe PALMER, Joanne TILL, Polly FISHER-EDWARDS, Megan WARD, Nick INSULL, Charlotte STELLING

Congratulations particularly to the group that joined us from Tri-Energy for their C25k Graduation Run.

We were thrilled to be donated a PB Bell by Mark WALLACE and it was great to hear it being rung! Here is Archie GOULDING celebrating his new Personal Best!

The event was made possible by 29 generous volunteers, who gave up their Saturday morning so that we could all take part:

Penelope Jane BARBER • Alexandra PRITCHARD • Mark WALLACE • Sarah PRICE • Andrea FORD • Elizabeth HINTON • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Lisa GARLICK • Ann CHADWICK • Rosie CHADWICK • Lauren CHADWICK • Heather MORGAN • Sandra PEDERSEN • Lindsay TILLSLEY • John FRANCIS • Deborah NEWBOULD • David FISH • Gavin MILLICHIP • Sara HARRIS • Emily PRICE • Querida WILLIAMS • Pauline SMITH • Caz SMITH • Zoe ELKIN • Peter CARTWRIGHT • Izzy ROLLIT • Ed ROLLIT • Fran CRICK

Particular thanks must go to lovely Heather MORGAN who volunteered for the 25th time earning her a nice new purple t-shirt!

Today was my 150th time as a parkrun volunteer and I also got to run for the 35th time by offering to write this run report. There are a few jobs that you can do to earn a run credit and volunteer credit for on the same day!:

  • Pre-event set-up (after training is given)
  • First Timers Briefing (we have notes so it's very easy!)
  • Tail Walker
  • Post Event Close Down
  • Run Report Writer

Writing the Run Report isn't difficult. We just like to hear about your parkrun from your perspective! Then we add in the facts and figures and upload it - voila! Simple.

As I'm writing the run report this week I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to all our volunteers who have given up their time as we approach our 200th run! Where has all that time gone?? We have had 593 different volunteers who have given up their time on 4,803 different occasions! So that covers many hours of marshaling, time keeping and scanning among other things!

Have you volunteered yet? If not, ask yourself - why not? If it's because you're not sure what it entails or you think it's too difficult please come and talk to one of our team and we can explain what happens, you could shadow someone for a little while after your run. There are roles to suit everyone and it really is very rewarding to give something back.

www.wyreforest@parkrun is the address to get involved!

My goal is to now try and run 50 parkruns before the end of the year (I'm definitely playing catch up!) and I couldn't do that with out a fabulous team of core volunteers, regulars and Run Directors who have enabled me to lighten the load this year. Big thank you to fellow RDs Jo WATSON, Graeme ANDERSON, Andy GARLICK, Neil CRABBE, Mark REAVES and David STARKIE in particular!

And finally, you all know by now that we are lucky enough to have a junior parkrun starting soon! Thank you so much to Shirley THOMAS and her team for getting it off the ground! Wyre Forest juniors will hold it's inaugural run on Sunday July 21st at 9am and all children 4-14 are welcome to attend so get them registered and barcodes printed ready! I attended the practice run and my girls really enjoyed it, it's going to be great fun!

So, it's our 200th parkrun this Saturday (already??!) and we have chosen a theme of SUMMER which should be easy for everyone to join in with. Keep it simple and wear your sunglasses or go all out and come in your best Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts! We love to see what you come up with is as always.

See you next time all,

Andie

18/05/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #192 Wendy’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun

Event number 192

18th May 2019

This week's run report is written by visitor Wendy SEARS (Isabel Trail parkrun). 60346157_10216651378371633_5989414718421336064_n

My first ever Wyre Forest parkrun
I'm not the greatest of parkrun tourists. I confess that I quite like to stay close to home and (with a few exceptions) tend to only visit other parkruns when I am on holiday in the area or running a race near to that parkrun. And so it was today.
Having arranged to run the 'Down to the Wyre 10k', it would have been positively rude not to also complete the parkrun taking place before it.I drove the 46 miles from Stafford, arriving at the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre with sufficient time to grab a cup of coffee, locate the onsite loos, and have a bit of banter with some of the volunteers who had arrived early to set up.
Parking was easy, with plenty of available space.. certainly at the time that I arrived. One of the stand out aspects of parkrun is the friendliness of the volunteers. I introduced myself to everyone I could find bedecked in the recognisable yellow, blue or orange parkrun volunteer tabards and was met with smiles and friendly conversation and a few useful tips about the course.
60342820_10216651373171503_2183064741922996224_n
The first time briefing was given with a lot of humour, with more than one reference to the word undulating and with confirmation that we would be in no doubt about the definition of that word undulating after we had gone through the finish funnel. This comment was met with a lot of laughter. After a detailed Run Director's briefing, we had a countdown to the start of the parkrun.
60342821_10216651372211479_3630192296579825664_n
The course itself is a mixture of tracks and trail paths and I have to say that I absolutely loved the first ten minutes, with some lovely downhill sections that allowed all runners, joggers and walkers to allow gravity to propel them forward, with giant trees shrouding the route. As someone who is more used to the relatively flat route of the Isabel Trail parkrun, I found myself slowing on some of the inclines. However I was given fantastic encouragement by marshals and other participants alike!
60434218_10216651369171403_8337375946466131968_n
The run to the funnel up what is colloquially referred to as 'Cardiac Hill' was interesting. I use the word 'run' very loosely - Haha. It was a challenging end to a great parkrun.
60388481_10216651382771743_1494155926129606656_n
I really enjoyed this parkrun. The course, the volunteers, and the participants all added elements that made the morning so memorable. I managed to take photos of most (if not all) of the volunteers who were so supportive and without whom this parkrun could not have taken place. Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome. Expect to see me next year. Keep the coffee warm!

Will do Wendy and hopefully we will see you again soon!

This week 241 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 30 were first timers and 44 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 28 different clubs took part.

20/04/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #188 run report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 188
20th April 2019

Each week we welcome tourists to Wyre Forest. Some are just away from home, taking advantage of a local parkrun wherever they are, but some are parkrun tourists, which you may or may not know is a thing in its own right.

Today we were visited by 34 tourists, all very welcome as always. Among them were Vicki Clarke and her husband James. I received an email from James during the week asking if he could volunteer to be barcode scanner, but saying he'd like to run the course first and he'd be done in about 18 minutes. I admired his optimism and replied saying that if he could make it round in 18 minutes then he could be a barcode scanner. Sure enough, he made it round in 5th place in 18 minutes 21 seconds and spent the rest of the morning scanning barcodes.

Vickie and James are parkrun tourists, which is an unofficial title for someone who has run at 20 or more parkrun locations. But Vickie wasn't content with just that and she and James are now working towards the Cowell Club, which is an unofficial club for all of those who have run at 100 different parkruns. Wyre Forest was their 87th, so they are well on their way and we wish them well with their endeavour.

You'll have noticed I refer to these as unofficial challenges or clubs, there are no milestone t-shirts for these, they are just fun little challenges that arose along the way. A variety of challenges now exist, some more serious than others. Do you want to join the Compass Club? Run four parkruns, one each with North, South, East and West in the name. Fancy being an alphabeteer? Run a parkrun beginning with each letter of the alphabet, except x which doesn't exist - for now. How about the Full Ponty? Run a parkrun at Pontefract, Pontypool and Pontypridd.

The list goes on and I am not going to try to mention them all here. If you think it may be of interest, you can find out more here: https://running-challenges.co.uk/.

The results also show that we were visited by another tourist worth a special mention, Mark ANNEAR, who was up from London and ran his 100th parkrun with us. Congratulations to him, had I known about it on the day I'd have given him a shout out at the briefing.

This week 300 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 58 were first timers and 57 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 31 different clubs took part.

Special congratulations to all those who ran their first ever parkrun:

Vicky WILLIAMS • Tunjay ORAN • Christopher FELLOWS • Jane YOUNG • Cody HODGKINSON • Frank WORNER • Joshua STOKES • Richard BURNETT • David BRAMALL • Roxy WHITE • Lyndsey ROBERTS • Claire SMITH • Dave COLEMAN • Clare COLEMAN • Paula FREEMAN • Pamela PALMER • Maria MARCOU • Despina MARCOU • Julie MILLMAN • Josie MILLMAN • Nick THOMPSON • Harri WILLIAMS • Luke LOWE • Sarah BACHE

The event was made possible by 30 volunteers:

Penelope Jane BARBER • Vicky HONEYBOURNE • Kim HOOD • James Richard Alexander CLARKE • Joanne WATSON • Deborah LOWE • Neil CRABBE • David STARKIE • Duncan STARKIE • Carole EVANS • Ann CHADWICK • Rosie CHADWICK • Lauren CHADWICK • Lindsay TILLSLEY • Vicki KELLY • Gavin MILLICHIP • Dawn WHITEHEAD • Sara HARRIS • Kevin HARRIS • Fereday ALICIA • Fereday SOPHIE • Stuart BIRD • Pauline SMITH • Dylan TURNER • Jennifer CLEE • Jeremy FERGUSON • Izzy ROLLIT • Ed ROLLIT • Fran CRICK • Freya KELLY

As always, a huge thanks to the volunteers, without you the event wouldn't run. If you have never volunteered, please consider it at a future event.

Have a great week everyone, see you next time.

Neil

Welcome to the 185th Wyre Forest parkrun run report! This week 262 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 46 were first timers and 51 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 26 different clubs took part.

This week we were short of a few volunteers. Luckily a couple of people came forward on Saturday morning and gave up their runs so everyone else could have theirs. Please don't look at the roster and assume it is full - often the volunteers are under 18 and need supervision, so the roster may not be as full as it looks. If you are yet to volunteer - please get in touch!

Welcome to:

Ryan BURKIN, Matthew BRANCH, Rebecca THOMPSON, Kris THOMPSON, Matt GILL, Archie SMITH, Paul FERN, Kerrie MCCLOY, Liz JOHNSON, Jodie BURKIN, Susan BELCHER, Philip GODDARD, Daisy SWANNELL, Sarah EGGINTON, Abby PHILPOTTS, Sam JOHNSON, Rachel BROOKES, Kate DULSON

And just as we said hello to lots of new parkrunners it was sadly time to say farewell to two of our most popular and regular parkrunners. Tina and Pete SMITH have been running at Wyre Forest since we began with their friends (two and four legged) at Forest Monsters. They have completed 187 parkruns between them. They are leaving the area to embark on new adventures in Scotland and we wish them all the very best. It really won't be the same without you both!

There were lots milestones achieved this week so looking forward to seeing some new t-shirts very soon! Well done to the following who all ran their 50th parkrun this week:

Harry EDWARDS (photographed below - Harry visited us with fiancee Lara and finished in style in first place with a new PB!), Rhodri PARFITT, Andrew CROOT, James PAYTON (also achieving a new PB - extra kudos!) and Linda MALLINSON (also going home with an awesome new PB!).

02/03/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #181 Sandra’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 181
2nd March 2019

What a fabulous morning for this weeks parkrun. Although we did not have the sun from the beginning of the week, storm Freya stayed away today to allow us to enjoy our beautiful Wyre forest parkrun. Spring is in the air and for those who looked carefully there were two rabbits joining our run this morning.

Welcome and well done to all who were first timers today or chose to visit Wyre Forest parkrun for the first time today. Hope to see you all again soon:

Archie JONES, Ricky WEBB, Andy JOHNSON, Richard FALLOWS, Liz WALKER, Rosie ELLIOTT, Joanne JONES

Some milestones t shirts were achieved today. Callum CHILDE achieved his 10 parkrun t shirt, Emma TIPTON and Sarah PERSICH both achieved 50 parkruns today and Deborah LOWE achieved her 100th parkrun. Well done to you all. When you get your new t shirts - wear them with pride.

Whether today was your first parkrun or your 325th, well done and thank you starting the weekend with Wyre Forest parkrun.

parkrun is such a brilliant event - free, gets you out and you can bring your family (human or dog) with you to enjoy. Whether you are first over the finish or the tail walker - everyone is welcome and all are encouraged along the way. What other event can tick all these boxes?

parkrun can only be free and take place each week with the help and support of our hero’s, who undertake various roles to allow those of us who run, to do so safely and allow the event to take place, therefore give volunteering a go. It’s a supportive community and there are many roles which need filling each week. Some roles mean you can still run and also be a hero. Contact the team and give it a go.

Email: wyreforest@parkrun.com

Enjoy your week and look forward to seeing you all next Saturday to do it all again.

We received visitors from Sandwell Valley, Kendal, Suffolk, Cannock and Perry Hall!

Thank you to tourist Darren for the following feedback:

"Was across here from Suffolk this weekend with my wife and we took part in your event.

Just wanted to say what a cracking park run you all do, much harder course than our flat one at Great Cornard, but a beautiful ,well run, friendly, event.

Thank you."

Cheers Darren, always good to hear great things about our event!

Do your bit by volunteering too - please email wyreforest@parkrun to put your name on our roster. Thank you.

Congratulations to the totally inspirational Lindsay PULLEY who bettered his own Age Category record for VM80-84 this week with a cracking time of 32:46. Lindsay is our oldest parkrunner and has now completed a whopping 236 parkruns. What a star!

lindsayACR

The following parkrunners achieved milestone recognition this week - welcome to the 50 club Sarah CLARK and junior Amaya MOORE.

We lost more finish tokens again this week (sad face). So please, please, please don't take our tokens home with you. If you have any of our finish tokens we would really like them back - just drop them in a bucket or hand to a volunteer who will be most grateful, thank you.

And very importantly - don't forget your barcode! And if you do, please do not ask any of our volunteers to manually enter your result as I'm afraid the answer will always be 'no'. Put a spare in your car, kit bag, mobile phone case or under your shoe insole now... just don't forget to bring it!

Thank you all, see you next time!
Andie
