07/03/2020 Wyre Forest parkrun #233 celebrates International Womens Day

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 233
7th March 2020

Thank you Pauline SMITH for this week's run report :-)

Today’s parkrun was in celebration of ‘International Women’s Day’ and a new selfie board reflecting this was sent from parkrun HQ. I hoped that many of you took the opportunity to use this board for your own selfies. Perhaps you could send some and we can post them on the website.

Our Event Director Andie celebrates IWD

It was lovely to be able to come to the forest in drier weather conditions than in recent weeks, however the course was still quite slippy in places but there was definite signs that spring is definitely on its way, with wild garlic starting to grow and the birds very chirpy. On the downside, we must apologise for the lack or toilet facilities at the start of the event, but luckily the problem was soon resolved. I hope this did not cause you too much in’convenience’. (groan groan groan).

Our Run Director today was Neil CRABBE who made sure that volunteers were where they should be and also ensuring that they wore to new pink Hi-Viz jackets. There were mixed opinions on these, with some preferring the yellow.

280 runners came to the forest to take part in this week’s run. The running conditions were very much improved on recent weeks and first past the post Stuart HAWKES did it in a rather speedy 19.26 minutes, well done. There were also 35 runners who achieved a new personal best at Wyre Forest parkrun. Well done all of you excellent running.

We also had 39 runners who were running at Wyre Forest for their first time. We really hope that you enjoyed your time in the forest, and look forward to welcoming you all back in the near future when the conditions will hopefully be much better that today.

What about all these milestones!! Well done to:

Lily HALLIDAY (10), Hidi JONES, Mark PARISH, Morgan PUPLETT, Helen PUPLETT, Heidrun HAEGE, Suzanne FIELD, Jules MONTAGUE (all 50) and Angela TWINE (100!)

Absolutely brilliant, all of you.

00100lrPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20200307093731154_COVER

Super Morgan and Helen after their 50th parkruns!

We also had an 'unofficial' milestone as one of our RDs Graeme celebrated his 150th parkrun in traditional Wyre Forest Hashers style - with fancy dress. You all looked fabulous!

Thank you Wyre Forest regular Pauline SMITH for this week's fab run report.

Was this the lull before the storm?  A large number of runners were in the forest today perhaps they were anticipating severe weather tomorrow?  There was also an enormous sea of red as local running group Cleobury Mortimer Running Club were using Wyre Forest parkrun as their first championship race/run of 2020.

The Run Director for today was David STARKIE who did a brilliant job of ensuring the run went smoothly and that the army of volunteers were where they should be. It was lovely to welcome tourists’ from Churchfields, St Albans and Trelissick parkruns.  We hope you enjoyed our parkrun.

Today there were several people who achieved milestones.  Katherine EVANS who has now volunteered 25 times; Fiona CLARKE who not only celebrated her 50th parkrun today but also achieved a (non-assisted!) PB. Well done Fiona.  Finally, Lindsay PULLEY who ran his 280th parkrun today.  Lindsay is a regular runner at Wyre Forest parkrun (and also a member of CMRC).  He has had an amazing running history and has even represented England as a veteran runner.  So to Katherine, Fiona and Lindsay well done on your amazing achievements from all at parkrun.

Today, 309 runners took part, which included 25 runners who completed their first ever parkrun.  We hope you enjoyed your run and that you will be back again in the near future. There were also 62 runners who achieved PB’s today (at least 15 of these were from CMRC) and CMRC made up almost 20% of the runners.  There was some really awesome running by everyone.

At Wyre Forest parkrun we are extremely fortunate to have a team of regular volunteers who turn up to support the runners.  Without these unsung heroes parkrun would not take place. If you have yet to volunteer, or are interested in finding out further information please look at the Wyre Forest parkrun web page, the link is below. Alternatively, speak to any of the volunteers next time you are at the event.  We are only too happy to help.

Before I go, can I just remind everyone not to take our finish tokens home! We have lost so many now that the replacements are not scanning properly and we will need to purchase a new set soon, at cost to us. If you see anyone pocketing a token please remind them that it needs to be returned thank you.

See you all next time!

16/11/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #218 ‘Ollie from Eastbourne’s run report

Wyre Forest parkrun

Event number 218

16th November 2019

This week's run report is brought to us by tourist Ollie Miller - thank you Ollie! Take it away...

Jane, do you fancy a few days break in Hartlebury with Auntie and Uncle in November?”, I ask.

What a great idea. You have some leave to use up, we haven't see them for a while and most importantly, Brighton are not playing at home that weekend,” she replies.

Fantastic, I will message them and see if they're available.”

Great, perhaps we can do a local parkrun on the Saturday,”

I know just the one!!!!!”

Finally, after many years of trying and failing, I have encouraged my fine wife of one-year to do the Wyre Forest parkrun. “Now, don't go out too hard because there is a hill at the end,” I explain. Having done Wyre Forest a few times, I know all about the Hill. I remember a volunteer advising me about the Hill on my very first Wyre Forest trip back in the glorious summer of 2017.

The Hill can't be that bad,” replies Jane.

Just wait and see!”. We arrive early, at 8:30, to do a quick course – or hill – check. Jane knows what she is up against in the final 500m. We are not big parkrun tourists, we are members of a local running group called the Polegate Plodders in Eastbourne, East Sussex. They regularly organise trips to nearby parkruns but we like the familiarity of the Eastbourne parkrun.

Anyway, back to Wyre Forest. First, can we just say how everyone was so welcoming and friendly; the openness and friendliness made this such a pleasurable morning and thank you to the locals who informed us that the hill is called “Cardiac Hill”.. Secondly, we were really impressed by the Run Director and Volunteer Coordinator Graeme ANDERSON. His speech was fantastic, thanking every volunteer in turn. This is definitely something we are going to suggest to Team Eastbourne.

MVIMG_20191116_100109

David E LEWIS from Halesowen A and CC came home first in a time of 20 minutes 5 seconds. Just under thirty seconds later was the first lady home, Alison McEWING  in a time of 20 minutes 33 seconds. Alison runs for Erme Valley Harriers and was a first timer at today's event. Overall, there were 12 First Timers to parkrun in general and 30 First Timers to Wyre Forest parkrun. 242 parkrunners jogged, ran or walked the course, of which 30 recorded Personal Bests. Well done to you all.

MVIMG_20191116_090618

There were three athletes who recorded significant milestones – Chris DEARNLEY, Lisa BIGGS and Christa MAWHINNEY all participated in their 50th parkrun. Don't forget to order your milestone t-shirts online. As well as Jane and I from Eastbourne, there were also visitors from Chichester (also down south), London and most impressively South Africa.

For us, it is back to the flat terrain of Eastbourne next week before we have small tourists trips to Hastings and Finsbury Park, London at the end of November and beginning of December. We are already looking at our diaries next year for another trip to Wyre Forest. We better hit the South Downs for some practice so we are ready for Cardiac Hill.

Great report thank you Ollie!

The event was made possible by 22 volunteers:

02/11/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #216 – this one really was the wettest one ever!

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 216
2nd November 2019

Well we thought after event no215 that this week couldn't possibly be any wetter! And how wrong we were. The water was running and gathering along lots of the paths and conditions were absolutely awful!

But it didn't put off 154 weather-proof people who ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 23 were first timers and 15 recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 24 different clubs took part.

These were all first time parkrunners, hats off to you all!:

Amelia HARTSHORN, Lisa HEMMING, Miriam MARSHALL, Anna KENT, Toni DIMBLEBEE, Amy SMITH, Alison PRIDGEON

The event was made possible by 20 volunteers who I really do think were quite amazing in the conditions so my upmost appreciation goes to:

Vicky HONEYBOURNE • Julie GOLDS • Andrea FORD • David STARKIE • Kirsty WILKES • Carole EVANS • Vicki KELLY • David FISH • Gavin MILLICHIP • Rachael SHEPHERD • David ALLISTON • Ruth ALLISTON • Stuart BIRD • Pauline SMITH • Caz SMITH • Linda MALLINSON • Jo BONNICK • Katherine EVANS • Christopher HANCOX • Deana KIMBER

19/10/2019 Wyre Forest parkrun #214 A view from tourist Sarah Ashby

Wyre Forest parkrun
Event number 214
19th October 2019

Thank you to Sarah ASHBY who visited us on Saturday for writing this week's fabulous run report!

Saturday is parkrun day and this week was no exception! Travelling from Bristol to the West Midlands for a day at the Safari park with children and friends, it was Wyre Forest’s turn this week. My husband isn’t a fan of getting up too early, but recently getting into parkrun and if I bribe him with breakfast and coffee after, he doesn’t usually take much persuading. So off we set for an early start, with our excited three year old in tow... she spends most Fridays asking “when can we parkrun mummy?” ! She didn’t join us in the buggy as usual this time but played in the mud with friends whilst we ran – which she was equally as happy with!

Wyre Forest event number 214 was great fun. The parkrun weather fairies were kind to us, despite it being slightly squidgy under foot and the forest was truly beautiful with its autumnal vibe. What struck me from the moment we arrived is how happy people were to be there and it was cheerful faces all around from the core team as we were greeted warmly by the Run Director. Huge thanks to the 21 volunteers named below who gave up their time to make today’s run possible, it really is appreciated by all us parkrunners.

Kim HOOD • Mark REAVES • Andrew GARLICK • Carole EVANS • Lisa GARLICK • Aran MOORE • Emma MORGAN • Jo MATHEWS • Rachael SHEPHERD • David ALLISTON • Ruth ALLISTON • Stuart BIRD • Sarah ASHBY • Pauline SMITH • Paul NEWRICK • Katherine EVANS • Steve REDDING • Debbie REDDING • Jules MONTAGUE • Deana KIMBER • Henry NEWALL

It was time for the all important run brief and welcoming tourists from as far as Australia, impressive! A few announcements, then it was 3,2,1... GO! I’d been warned the previous week by a fellow parkrunner at my home parkrun “I hope you like hills...”, but I must admit that I hadn’t quite appreciated just how hilly it would be – especially that cheeky uphill finish which just seemed to go on and on! At almost 32 weeks pregnant, it was rather different to my usual flat home parkrun – but needless to say, I still absolutely loved it! There’s something just so lovely about running through the beautiful colours of the forest and squishy trails underfoot, so despite the ups this really is a lovely parkrun and I’m chuffed I managed to run the whole lot.

Today saw 237 of us runners, joggers and walkers taking on this great course. 40 of these celebrated with a lovely little PB, and 32 people in total did this gem of a parkrun for the first time. 8 of these were completely new to parkrun - welcome to the first parkrun of the rest of your life! We hope you enjoyed it as much as the rest of us do. A huge well done also goes to Christopher Hancox and Melanie Parker who completed their 50th milestone run today, and Carole Hender and Ian Bell who completed their 100th – congratulations!

Saturday mornings always make me smile. What resonates with me every single week is that parkrun is many things to many people. And Wyre Forest you were no exception. There were walkers, buggies, dogs, children, running clubs represented, cheery marshals cheering us on, you name it. There’s something so therapeutic about a forest parkrun, we really enjoyed the course. Thank you for putting on such a fab event and another Saturday morning well spent. We’ll be sure to visit again when we’re in the area!

Extra thanks to them on what turned out to be a very soggy morning!!

Don't forget that without volunteers there is no parkrun so please do your bit and take your turn to keep your local event going and let the regulars take a morning off! Email wyreforest@parkrun.com to add your name to our roster. Thank you.

Our volunteer shout out this week goes to Jake GOOD who completed his 25th stint as a volunteer at last week's Wyre Forest junior parkrun and helped us out this week. Thank you very much Jake!

The juniors need lots of marshals to maintain supervision and sight of the whole course and I know they'd love to hear from you if you can spare an hour. The junior run is 2km so it's generally all done by 9:25am! If you can't bare to give up a Saturday parkrun how about helping on a Sunday?? Their email address is wyreforestjuniors@parkrun.com. Cheers!!

Today was my 150th time as a parkrun volunteer and I also got to run for the 35th time by offering to write this run report. There are a few jobs that you can do to earn a run credit and volunteer credit for on the same day!:

  • Pre-event set-up (after training is given)
  • First Timers Briefing (we have notes so it's very easy!)
  • Tail Walker
  • Post Event Close Down
  • Run Report Writer

Writing the Run Report isn't difficult. We just like to hear about your parkrun from your perspective! Then we add in the facts and figures and upload it - voila! Simple.

As I'm writing the run report this week I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to all our volunteers who have given up their time as we approach our 200th run! Where has all that time gone?? We have had 593 different volunteers who have given up their time on 4,803 different occasions! So that covers many hours of marshaling, time keeping and scanning among other things!

Have you volunteered yet? If not, ask yourself - why not? If it's because you're not sure what it entails or you think it's too difficult please come and talk to one of our team and we can explain what happens, you could shadow someone for a little while after your run. There are roles to suit everyone and it really is very rewarding to give something back.

www.wyreforest@parkrun is the address to get involved!

My goal is to now try and run 50 parkruns before the end of the year (I'm definitely playing catch up!) and I couldn't do that with out a fabulous team of core volunteers, regulars and Run Directors who have enabled me to lighten the load this year. Big thank you to fellow RDs Jo WATSON, Graeme ANDERSON, Andy GARLICK, Neil CRABBE, Mark REAVES and David STARKIE in particular!

And finally, you all know by now that we are lucky enough to have a junior parkrun starting soon! Thank you so much to Shirley THOMAS and her team for getting it off the ground! Wyre Forest juniors will hold it's inaugural run on Sunday July 21st at 9am and all children 4-14 are welcome to attend so get them registered and barcodes printed ready! I attended the practice run and my girls really enjoyed it, it's going to be great fun!

So, it's our 200th parkrun this Saturday (already??!) and we have chosen a theme of SUMMER which should be easy for everyone to join in with. Keep it simple and wear your sunglasses or go all out and come in your best Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts! We love to see what you come up with is as always.

See you next time all,

Andie
